Disasters Final In 2002 a mysterious disease swept through China killing many and eventually spreading around the world and causing havoc internationally This disease which was eventually named and discovered a few years later was SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome This atypical pneumonia is extremely contagious and is spread through coughing sneezing and talking to someone who is infected This can either be passed directly through contact with the droplets or by touching an object that had the droplets on it like a door knob This disease spread quickly around to unknowing travelers around the world The disease usually starts with flu like symptoms but can be identified once the person begins to get an extremely high fever and is usually followed with pneumonia The disease can be treated but can become extremely dangerous and fatal if it is pushed off too long Most people usually die due to respiratory failure but can also die from heart failure as well In 2002 this first spread through China and led to many people dying due to the government not informing the people and not treating the people properly at the time which eventually helped lead to the disease spreading worldwide Around November 2002 in Foshan China was the first case recorded of SARS though they did not know what it was at the time Initially the doctors believed that the man had a new strain of the flu but were confused when he was not getting better and was only getting worse However though the hospital reported the case the government didn't test it for a long time and kept all the information they discovered secret to the public when they did This caused fear and rumors around the area as people tried to figure out what is was and how they could possibly prevent it from spreading more

Many news articles thought it was a bird flu and told people to change the air ventilation in their homes to use vinegar to disinfect the air and to frequently wash their hands This information however was only speculation and proved to be useless in stopping the disease from spreading around the country and the world Eventually on February 11th the government told to people that it was SARS and that there were no drugs or treatments for the viruses However the people were quickly put in a black out of information again as people demanded more information which caused more devastation and spreading in the country and eventually around the world During the outbreak more than 5 300 people were infected and over 345 people had died due to it Though the government wasn t very involved at first they eventually launched a crusade against SARS and worked hard on trying to find a way to treat the disease and keep it from spreading even more Though the government had done this there was still a distrust of the government from the people since they had withheld the information for so long and played down the risk when they finally did tell them Due to this disaster the government took unknown outbreaks more seriously and provided the community with more information about the disease and other unknown diseases that came about Eventually a few years later they were able to get it under control in June and was completely eliminated in August After the disaster people became more informed and less trusting of the government This outbreak however did have a few positives to it

Though the outbreak in China and around the world was devastating there were a few positives that came out due to it When the outbreak had first started no one knew what the disease was and had no idea on how to approach helping the people who were infected or how to prevent the spread Due to research that was done during and after the outbreak SARS is rarely deadly anymore and there hasn't been a large outbreak of it since This is due to the fact that people now know how it spreads and what they can do to keep it from spreading to them The government in China also put more research into unknown diseases afterwards and were more open and honest with their people about diseases and outbreaks in the country Though the outbreak of SARS was a deadly disaster there were many positives that came out that bettered the health and informed the people in China and around the world The SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory outbreak swept across China and impacted the country and the world This disaster not only created distrust among the people and the Chinese government but also led to more research put into this disease and the other unknown diseases that pop up This atypical form of pneumonia was extremely contagious and deadly when it first spread killing over 350 people in China and causing panic and dismay around the world This outbreak and disaster won't be forgotten and has helped impact the world and made the people more aware of unknown diseases
