In 1972 Dr Seuss published The Lorax The story is about of strange isolated man who lives in a very polluted area The strange man called the Once ler is visited by a curious young boy who is seeked to hear the legend of the Lorax The Once ler tells the boy of his arrival to a valley filled with Truffula trees and a range of animals The Once ler in his long anticipation of seeing a Truffula tree began to chop down the tree to use its silk like texture to put together his versatile invention called the Thneed Appearing from the stump of a Truffula tree comes the Lorax the speaker of the trees The Lorax shares his disapproval in what the Once ler is doing but to no success Encouraged by the prosperity of his new found garment the Thneed the Once ler sees his chance at financial growth His small shop turns into a giant factory were he has his relatives come to work and new machinery is used to chop trees like nothing The Lorax informs the Once ler of the damage he is doing to the environment causing all the animals to migrate away from their home The Once ler is yet again reluctant to stop his business
The last Truffula tree falls forcing the factory to go out of business leaving the Once ler in ruins The Lorax who warned the man multiple times ascends into the sky across the barren wasteland All that remained where the Lorax once stood was a stone engraved saying UNLESS Years later the Once ler realizes what the Lorax's message meant Unless someone cares enough nothing will get better The Once ler gives the boy the last Truffula tree seed and encourages him to grow the tree very quickly so that the animals and the Lorax will come back While many feel that the main idea of The Lorax by Dr Seuss is about being environmentally friendly it's actually about being a savvy businessman Some believe that this short story is about the environment Toward the beginning of the story the narrator states Way back in the days when the grass was still green and the pond was still wet and the clouds were still clean Seuss This is before the Once ler made his arrival in the valley and started up his Thneed business Once the Once ler's business is turns into a full blown factory it starts to take its effects on the ecosystem The Lorax alerts to Once ler of all his damage by saying Once ler You re making such smogulous smoke My poor Swomee Swans why they can't sing a note No one can sing who has smog in his throat And so said the Lorax please pardon my cough they cannot live here So I'm sending them off Seuss The animals are beginning to be pushed out of their own environment due to the horrible living conditions The water as well begins to become polluted Let me say a few words about Gluppity Glupp Your machine chugs on day and night without stop making Gluppity Glupp Also Schloppity Schlopp And what do you do with this leftover goo I ll show you You dirty old Once ler man you You're glumping the pond where the Humming Fish hummed No more can they hum for their gills are all gummed
So I'm sending them off Oh their future is dreary Seuss Due to the destruction of the environment and forcing out everything within in one can see how Seuss writes the story to promote being environmentally friendly The Once ler did what every entrepreneur strives to do grow his or her business so that they grow financially He used natural resources to help put together his product and sell it to the consumers His invention was genius and he knew if he got it on the market he could sell large amounts of them The Thneed had many uses it was a shirt It's A sock It's A glove It's A hat But it has other uses Yes far beyond that You can use it for carpets For pillows For sheets Or curtains Or covers for bicycle seats Seuss When the Once ler realized his product would sell he called his family to come help him produce Thneeds as well as built a large factory By bringing in his relatives it helped the company grow by having more employees By building a large factory it helped the Once ler expand his means of production The Once ler used the natural resources around him to help grow his Thneed business I had to grow bigger So bigger I got I buggered my factory I biggered my roads I buggered my wagons I biggered the loads of the Thneeds I shipped out I was shipping them forth to the South To the East To the West To the North I went right on biggering selling more Thneeds And I biggered my money which everyone needs Seuss The Once ler was able to grow his business so that he could profit which is the sole purpose of being a savvy businessman Dr Seuss was an extraordinary man who wrote many great stories filled with even greater lessons inside them The lesson behind The Lorax was how to be a savvy businessman Throughout the book Seuss demonstrates how the Once ler grew his business and expanded it into being such a financial success Seuss intended for the main idea of the book to be from a business aspect and that's exactly what he did
