English Essay In Shakespearean time relationships differed greatly than what Macbeth and Lady Macbeth portrayed Their ambition and love for one another were demonstrated numerously throughout the play With the want for power Lady Macbeth takes control of her husband with her importance descending later on switching roles with Macbeth The relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth shifts throughout the play with the two characters individually seeking a more dominant role after the murder of King Duncan In the beginning Macbeth was a loyal soldier who was trusted greatly by his King The witches Prophecies had brought out his ambitious side but caused him to struggle with constant paranoia and distress after the murder of Duncan After hearing the prophecy Macbeth is said to become Thane of Cawdor Shortly after Lady Macbeth receives the letter explaining the prophecy Overcome with an urge to attain the power she insists on killing Duncan and overtaking the throne Macbeth replies with no intention of doing that terrible act stating We will proceed no further in this business He hath honored me of late and I have bought Golden opinions from all sorts of people Which would be worn now in their newest gloss Not cast aside so soon 1 7 34 39 King Duncan was a trusting man to Macbeth He didn t want to do such a harsh act to a friend someone he had once hosted while Duncan had honored Macbeth as a great soldier He had also worried about the consequences and what would happen to them if they were caught Taking more control over the situation Lady Macbeth had expressed how it had to be done Shortly after Macbeth gave in After proceeding with their plan of tricking the guards Duncan had finally been defeated After the murder of Duncan the first major change we see in Macbeth is with his mental state Along with hearing noises he hears voices speak to him where he describes Methought I heard a voice cry

Sleep no more Macbeth does murder sleep the innocent sleep 2 2 47 48 Macbeth had realized what he had done Killing such innocent people he now will be haunted by that thought for the rest of his life One of the other major changes was just shortly after Duncan s death When answering who had killed the guards he stepped up and admitted O yet I do repent me of my fury That I did kill them 2 3 124 125 Here Macbeth stands forth taking control of the situation saying that he had killed the guards due to seeing Duncan which was a total lie From that point on Macbeth became invincible He would do anything to stop the people that might get in the way of him achieving the power of being Thane of Cawdor He moved on and killed Banquo and Macduff s wife and children becoming a cold blooded killer On the other hand Lady Macbeth had taken full control of her husband slowly persuading him to commit the murder so they would be in power When guilt overrides her she falls into despair soon being the cause of her ending her life Since Lady Macbeth received the letter she was determined to gain the throne She calls upon evilness In doing so she calls

Come you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts unsex me here And fill me from the crown to the toe top full Of direst cruelty 1 5 47 50 She wants to replace her womaness with cruelty and to leave everything in her hands As Macbeth was more hesitant about situations she was more to the point as you can see when she stated what s done is done 3 2 14 Lady Macbeth uses this phrase to add some relief to her husband after the murder of King Duncan She is trying to explain that the past cannot be changed so it is best to just forget about it Moving forward as Macbeth admitted he killed the guards this is where Lady Macbeth takes a step back She is seen fainting and does not show for a while after until the banquette Towards the end of the play Lady Macbeth is falling apart She is seen numerous times sleepwalking re creating her crimes from the past restating What s done cannot be undone 5 7 68 From this point Lady Macbeth is suffering in her guilt She has fallen in the same place her husband has once been in In the last scene her death is mentioned where it is presumed she takes her own life In the end the witches prophecies had led Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to crumble by their overwhelming guilt and the thoughts that linger in their minds after the murder of Duncan and the others Macbeth started from a trusted soldier who later deteriorated from the looming thoughts that consumed his mind after multiple murders he committed On the other hand Lady Macbeth was the opposite seeking total control at the beginning of the play The want for a more dominant role as king and queen ultimately got the best of them At the end of the play both tragically die Lady Macbeth ends up possibly taking her own life with the absence of her husband dying alone in her last moments of life Macbeth is overcome by Macduff and is defeated while in battle with him
