In the late 19th century America was grappling with who it was as a country found of the ideology that all men and women are created equal Americans were identified by their place in the social hierarchy and economic class During this era many individuals sought to believe slavery was morally right and fair thus making it acceptable in society Furthermore women were suppressed and berated in society making them less of an individual and more of property The idea of not to confine to the principles and standards of society are being conveyed in this unit about individualism and the relationship between the individual and society All these pieces demonstrate the need of freedom and liberty as individuals something that society struggles to do As America developed American individuals sought to emphasize and accentuate subject matters such as race self identity and rights for all Women during the 19th century were oppressed and perceived to be inferior to men thus excluding them as a whole in society Abstaining from the truth that women protesting and attending political speeches was considered gauche for they began taking on serious roles in the abolition and temperance movement

One as such the Seneca Falls Convention in which numerous of women especially from the middle and low class became vocal participants of the women s right and suffrage movement Being the first convention which demanded equal rights for women on as such the right to vote Hence to call attention to unfair treatment of women and organized by women for women Not to mention one who supported the movement and spoke in support was Frederick Douglass where then 68 women and 32 men signed the historic document All side many individuals did not seem to agree with these changes and motions for women s rights Although many individuals would argue and state this to be unethical and wrong for this should not happen Choppin remarks He has endeavored in every way that he could to destroy her confidence in her own powers to lessen her self respect and to make her willing to lead a dependent and abject life 169 Stating that men could have full tyranny and dominance over the women thus making her as property and having the right to destroy every aspect of her confidence and self esteem Individuals fail to note and understand that women during this era were often exploited and abuse nevertheless limited to their rights and freedom as people In Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address he conveys the division of the Nation and one of the prompt issues slavery Lincoln s speech indicates the South seceding from the Union thus the reason for doing so One as such the punishment for the sin of slavery in which both sides were complicit in However slaves were undermine and not represented for therefore had no say to speak for themselves Individuals would disagree and insist that the slaves were the prominent reason of the Civil War between the North and South

One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves not distributed generally over the Union but localized in the southern part of it These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful howl interest All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war Second Inaugural Address 181 This was an economic matter for the South and a moral issue for the North For this was about freedom and rights for everyone including the African Americans during the time and individualism Huckleberry Finn lives in a society based on rules and laws that are imposed many of which are both absurd and inhumane Throughout the novel The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn Huck expresses individualism in the sense that he managed to raise himself and rely on his own instincts For he is exposed to the darker side of society where citizens do dreadful and repulsive deeds Huck is oblivious to the laws of society and believes it is just he therefore condemns himself as a traitor and a villain for acting against them and aiding Jim Huck s recognition of Jim's humanity and his feelings for him develop gradually

Many would declare and expect Huck to feel any more than he does is yet unrealistic For it was frowned upon to help another runaway slave Nevertheless as Jim joins Huck on his grand adventure Huck has the choice to expose Jim as a runaway slave or assist him However many individuals do not bring to the attention that during this era slaves were abused and maltreated in society for they had no voice right or freedom Society often tries to civilize and christianize Huck for they do not accept him as he is The Widow Douglas she took me for her son and allowed she would sivilize me but it was rough living in the house all the time considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways and so when I couldn't stand it no longer I lit out Mark Twain 3 By reforming and forcing Huck to be this stereotypical upstanding youth of society Huck confronts many aspects of society which makes him choose his individuality of civilization All in all during the late 19th century these following texts conveyed contriveserval subjects such as race individualism and rights for all something society was indisposed of
