However intrinsic motivation can also be prevented if the basic psychological needs are opposed Ryan and Deci 2000 p 229 state that these needs are important in order to produce behaviours through motivation of the self and establish the fundamental provisions which are crucial in sustaining psychological health and well being Gagné et al 2014 further promotes the necessity of basic psychological needs satisfaction for people s health improvements commitment motivation levels and well being The continuum which represents BPNS motivation and well being also supports that by way of motivation BPNS results in enhanced physical and psychological well being Basic psychological need satisfaction is fundamental for optimal functioning and has a direct relationship with well ill being Ryan and Deci 2002 p 6 Through self determined choices the dancer was able to successfully implement basic psychological needs into their injury rehabilitation by acting from intrinsic goals that reflected their own domain For example initiating self chosen activities including the length of time to dance for and what movements to perform whilst taking into account the severity of the injury This produced a feeling of gratification and the sense of moving forward which depicts an effective outcome however in order to satisfy competence effectively a stronger connection with autonomy was needed The type of activities chosen need to be autonomous for competence to be satisfied the dancer self choosing to take risks during injury rehabilitation by performing more difficult movements may have generated a higher level of competence however in this situation they did not have the control due to decisions made by more superior bodies who recommended not to attempt these types of movements as it was too high risk

Relatedness was satisfied throughout the dancer's injury rehabilitation with support from health professionals and their dance tutors who understood why the dancer could not dance properly but still made them feel valued For example the dance tutors would alter movements so the dancer could still participate without affecting their injury When linking these theories to the dancer s injury rehabilitation it is also important to consider the psychological interventions which could further support the attribute of motivation Santi 2013 suggests an educational intervention whereby the athlete understands their circumstance and therefore is aware of the process needed for rehabilitation which speeds the recovery up This can also be linked to goal setting which will provide the athlete with the means to stay committed In relation to the dancer s circumstance this intervention helped through their injury rehabilitation such as when seeking help from a physiotherapist which helped them to return to dancing at an enhanced level The dancer s goals were appropriate and allowed them to increase self control supporting that goals created should follow certain principles specific measurable realistic stimulating and time based Weinberg 2009 With support from health experts appropriate goal setting boosted recovery and working with a physiotherapist also helped the dancer to gain knowledge with regards to proper injury rehabilitation which reduced the risk of further harm further supporting Santi s 2013 intervention
