The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was a major turning point in history it was the period when the way products were produced was innovating at an extreme rate Some of the main technological advances during the Industrial Revolution were the steam engine spinning jenny and cotton gin such as the train Source 1 An industrial society is a society which runs by the use of technology for mass production of goods as opposed to an agrarian society which needed human labor source 3 Working conditions during this time for factory workers was awful they were underpaid and worked very long shifts Living conditions were terrible as well people all wanted jobs so they moved source 6 The Industrial Revolution is important because it paved the way modern day industrial societies are conducted An industrial society depends on machines instead of human labor to support a population Before the industrial revolution farmers would farm themselves or with workers but workers were replaced with machines Due to the Industrial Revolution many factories were created where work was distributed to different parts which led to the use of an assembly line An assembly line is a process that most factories use to produce goods it is a process that workers stand with parts of the products they are building are put together and passed from one person to the next source 7 One of the main technological advances was the steam engine an engine using steam as a power source This lead to new and improved forms of transportation such as the train and the steamboat

This made it easier to transport products faster source 1 One of the first inventions of the Industrial Revolution was the cotton gin which was the new mechanical way of separating seeds from cotton which was previously done by man The cotton gin made it possible to produce up to 50 times the amount of cotton than being separated by men source 2 Another new invention was the spinning jenny which made it easier to spin more wool at once making production much more efficient The textile industry benefits tremendously from the spinning jenny because of how much faster different materials could be spun Life for factory workers during the Industrial Revolution was very hard and dangerous they worked for very long hours and were often underpaid Machines weren't safe at all meaning many workers got injured often Businesses treated people as tools and because everyone wanted to work in the factories people were considered expendable if something happens to one worker they can just hire another worker Workers would work extremely long hours up to 16 hours a day six days a week with only lunch and dinner breaks

They were also paid around 10 cents an hour women and children got paid even less Machines were dangerous and caused many injuries to occur to all workers including women and children source 6 Due to poor working conditions labor unions were formed Labor unions were formed by workers who disliked the way corporations were run Workers disliked how unsafe their jobs were and how little they were getting paid they formed unions as a voice to state their thoughts They sought to make changes such as limiting the amount of time they can work an age minimum to work and several other things to improve working conditions In the end labor unions became official and big businesses had no choice but to provide their employees with their demands source 6 Living conditions during this time were difficult as well Due to industrialization everyone wanted a job in a factory so many people moved to get jobs Many people would be crammed into small rooms that were like the size of a small apartment This was a very unsafe environment because there was a lack of medicine so disease would spread quickly usually resulting in death As more people moved in conditions worsened and the people living in the so called slums couldn't move away because they couldn't afford it due to the low wages source 6

Overall the Industrial Revolution was a pivotal point in history because many modern day industrial societies started from then To this day there are labor unions minimum wages child labor laws that all sprouted from the Industrial Revolution Transportation of goods has become more efficient now because of the invention of the steam engine which new versions of the engine built upon Works Cited source 1 The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica Steam Engine Encyclopædia Britannica Encyclopædia Britannica Inc 7 Dec 2017 www britannica com technology steam engine source 2 The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica Industrial Revolution Encyclopædia Britannica Encyclopædia Britannica Inc 2 May 2017 www britannica com event Industrial Revolution source 3 Elliot Hollie Agrarian vs Industrial Accokeek Foundation 22 Oct 2013 accokeek foundation org agriculture and farming agrarian vs industrial source 4 History com Staff History com staff Industrial Revolution History com A E Television Networks 0 Feb 2009 www history com topics industrial revolution source 5 l Robin Important Inventions of the Industrial Revolution Bright Hub Education 4 Apr 2012 www brighthubeducation com history homework help 91805 important inventions of the industrial revolution Source 6 Poddar Ankur https firstindustrialrevolution weebly com working and living conditions html Source 7 The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica Assembly Line Encyclopædia Britannica Encyclopædia Britannica Inc 4 Aug 2016 www britannica com technology assembly line
