The Middle Ages During the Middle Ages between 500 and 1400 some could argue that there are three labels that could describe this era in Europe The Dark Ages the Age of Feudalism and the Age of Faith Out of all three labels the best one to describe this era would be the Dark Ages Some may also argue that this era could be labeled as the Age of Feudalism or the Age of Faith The best label for this era is the Dark Ages because during this time period there was a lot of fighting and invasions throughout Europe This era could also be described as the Age of Feudalism since there was so much fighting and invasions in Europe there was a trade of land for service Also the Age of Faith could describe this era because during the Middle Ages the catholic church had a strong influence on society such as their beliefs and their devotion to God The Dark Ages is the best label for the era in Europe during the Middle ages between 500 and 1400 because during this time period Europe was very hostile due to the fact that there were invasions happening all around Europe and also a lot of fighting One specific time period talked about in The Middle Ages was the 800 s the ninth and tenth century According to The Middle Ages Heinemann 1922 pp 1 3 During this time barbarians had broken through ramparts the Saracen invasions spread in waves over the South and the Hungarians swarmed over the Eastern provinces

The Hungarians sacked towns villages and destroyed their fields They also burned down churches then departed with captives They had forced people to flee in terror to the mountains forest or inaccessible regions leaving society without any government just Anarchy According to The Anglo Saxon Chronicles in the year 842 there was a great slaughter in London and Quentovic and in Rochester and in the year 846 the Northmen plundered and burned the town of Dordrecht They also filled their boats with men and goods and returned to their own country When most people hear the words Dark Ages they think of a period where things are not very productive and there is a lot of violence occurring That is exactly what was happening in Europe during the Middle Ages nothing was productive and people were constantly in battle fighting and that's why the Dark Age fits best for the era of the Middle Ages between 500 and 1400 One label that could be argued is a good fit for the era in the Middle Ages would the Age of Feudalism This could be a good label because during the years between 500 and 1400 Europe was a feudal society Europe was a feudal society because it was built around a culture of warfare during this time Europe developed a system of feudalism which is a trade of land for service In the excerpt from the Homage of Oath taken by John of Toul it says that John

Toul will aid the count of Champagne and will send to the count and countess of Champagne the knights whose service he owes them for the fief which he holds of them In simpler terms this excerpt says that John of Toul will aid the count of Champagne in war and send the knights to Champagne because he owed service to them to for the land in which they gave him This shows why the Age of Feudalism could be a label for this era because this trade of land for service became extremely common in Europe during the Middle Ages This was common because during this era land equaled wealth so people decided to become knights to gain land wealth Finally another alternative label that could be a good fit for the era in the Middle Ages during the years between 500 and 1400 would be the Age of Faith The Age of Faith would be a good label too because during this era the Catholic Church had a strong influence on society such a their beliefs also their religious and spiritual devotion to God One example of this is in the excerpt from the monastic vows of Brother Gerald Monks purpose was to devote themselves to the will of God and to live a pure life The vows Monks took were a vow of purity poverty and chastity in hopes of making it to heaven The Catholic church had influenced people to become Monks because it was a way out of all the hostility and warfare going on in Europe during the Middle Ages There are three labels that could be used to describe the era in the Middle Ages during the years between 500 and 1400 The Dark Ages the Age of Feudalism and the Age of Faith but of all three labels the best one to describe this era would be the Dark Ages Some may also argue that this era could be labeled as the Age of Feudalism or the Age of Faith The Dark Ages describes the hostile side of this era which was filled with many battles and invasions in Europe The Age of Feudalism describes the system set up in the Middle Ages to reward people for their service in the military Finally the Age of Faith The Age of Faith shows the fact that during this era the Catholic Church had a huge influence over society All these three labels highlight and define what it was like during era of the Middle Ages and time period
