Timer Test subjects Paper and pencil for recording and analyzing data Procedures Write and print copies one copy per test subject of two simple subtraction worksheets Have two groups of four students One group will complete the worksheet without chewing gum and another group of four students will test with chewing gum to see if the group with chewing gum could score better than the group without chewing gum The group that will be work with gum will be Group A while the others work on their worksheets without chewing gum will be Group B 1 P a g e Have subjects do each of the worksheets Record how long it took each subject to complete each worksheet Score the worksheets for several problems correct Analyze your results 2 P a g e Results Series 1 Group A and B students were testing in a quiet classroom with a teacher administering the test to each group Each group was given 2 minutes to complete as many problems as possible The results of the testing are summarized in the chart shown below In Series 1 the students who completed the test with gum scored better than the students without gum To ensure that the data was not skewed the second series of testing was done to confirm the initial results Results Series 2 Group A and B students were testing in a quiet classroom with a teacher administering the test to each group Each group was given 2 minutes to complete as many problems as possible

The results of the testing are summarized in the chart shown below The exact same test was administered to the same group of students again two weeks later so students cannot memorize the answers questions Students have the same two variables with gum and without gum In the second test the without gum tested better than the without gum test group These results contrast with my original hypothesis 3 P a g e Conclusion After conducting this experiment on two different occasions using the same group of students Honor Roll Gifted Students we have concluded that there are many variables factors that contribute to students ability to complete the subtraction problems correctly in the allotted time Variables such as motivation test taking skills speed student's mood are all factors which contribute to the student s results To further investigate this problem next time I would try this experiment with boys and girls I would test groups of boys with and without gum and compare them to groups of girls with and without gum
