When a child encounters a new information or idea he tries to understand it by fitting it into existing schema without any alteration in original one Through process of assimilation one can relates new information with previously learned things Accommodation is a process in which the new information challenged the existing schema and caused the revision of existing schema to adjust the new information It is also possible that a new schema may be formed in this process A child in his home he makes a schema of cat as a four legged animal with a tail and fur One day saw another cat on road that was different in color and size but the child called it a cat because it has 4 legs a tail and fur on body So this is the process of assimilation in which he put new information into existing schema A child in his home he makes a schema of cat as a four legged animal with a tail and hair One day he saw another creature in a zoo that has 4 legs a tail and fur on body so he called it a cat at that time his mother corrects him that it is not a cat but a lion cub So he adjusts this information into new category and finds out the difference that lion cub and cat sounds differently The cub roars while cat meow So this is the process of accommodation

A child has a schema of bird that they have wings and they fly He saw a parrot flying and recognize it as a bird because parrot has wings and it flies Then he saw a sparrow He will check his schema of bird and notice that this creature also has wings and it also fly in air so he put sparrow in the category of bird A child has a schema that any vehicle that has 4 tyres and drive on road is a car One day he saw another vehicle on road with 4 tyres but his mother corrects him that it is not a car but a van So he accommodates this new information and make another category of van and finds out the difference between van and car In the given example a girl have a schema of dog that any animal with 4 legs a tail and hair on body is a dog But when she encounters a cat she called it a dog because it has 4 legs a tail and hair on body This is assimilation When she encounters a cat and called it a dog her father will told her that it is not a dog It is a cat So in this way the schema gets modified This is accommodation The dog schema of a girl changes when her father told her that it is a cat Some of the characteristics are different in cats Like dog barks and cat meow Most of the dogs are bigger than cats So she can adjust this new information by modifying schema Q 1 Differentiate the role of school activities school rules and school buildings according to the essentialist and progressive philosophies School activities Essentialist philosophy

According to essentialist philosophy the school activities focuses not only on academics but also on the character building of the students So that they became the civilized citizens of society Most classroom activities are done under the supervision and dictation of teacher which is already planned by the teacher Example Curricular like art and music and extra curricular activities playing games like football are designed to instill characteristics like cooperation moral values in students Progressive philosophy According to the progressive philosophy the role of school activities is to provoke inquisitiveness in students so that they can learn by doing Students work in groups and perform activities according to their interests Example For example in class they are studying states of matter and they will learn by experiencing different things In extra curricular activities playing games like chess It helps in solving problems And instills the characteristics like democratic values in students School rules According to essentialist school rules are strict in nature Teacher has the complete authority Teacher is responsible to maintain discipline Example For example in essentialist classroom teacher has the full authority and students have to follow the time table strictly Lecture is of 35 or 40 min they follow the command of their teacher

According to progressivism philosophy the rules and regulations are not so strict Example In progressivism there are flexible rules for example in class teacher can allow students to practically experience things without any strict limitation of time School building In essentialist school separate classrooms are given to each grade and students are divided into manageable groups Teacher has the full control over the class He delivers the lecture and students listen passively to the teacher The sitting arrangement is in such a way that they can not communicate each other More focus is laid on students grades rather than on the students learning Example In classroom there is a specific sitting arrangement Mostly students sits in rows on their specific chairs According to progressivism theory the sitting arrangements are flexible students can change their sitting arrangements according to the need and according to the comfort level Student is an active learner he can communicate with teacher and with his other fellows Teacher is a facilitator More focus is laid on student's learning Example Autonomy is experienced in class Students work in groups and sit where they want They can freely move in the class
