When it comes to the war on drugs the biggest target seems to be marijuana Many people would ask why marijuana is still illegal when tobacco and alcohol two dangerous drugs are still legal Marijuana is illegal because the government has too much invested in the fight Basically the government can not stop now Americans must look at the bigger picture and see that marijuana has more potential than creating a stereotypical long haired hippy stoner There are many benefits that come from the legalization of marijuana such as economic benefits medicinal benefits and industrial benefits The U S government spends an average of 30 Billion dollars each year on the prohibition of marijuana and that number continues to rise each year www drugsense org Legal marijuana tax revenue hit 226 157 028 in Colorado last year according to the states government website and marijuana sales hit 1 259 861 988 www colorado gov If marijuana were to be legalized in all 50 states and each state had the same numbers as Colorado we would see around a 11 3 billion dollar yearly tax profit and a total of around 63 billion profit in taxes and sale combined

Just imagine what each state could do with the profits of legalizing marijuana Our economy would also see reduction in marijuana related arrests and more space open in jails and prisons for violent offenders An average of 50 percent of prison inmates are incarcerated for marijuana charges It is estimated that every 30 seconds an american is arrested for a cannabis related charge drugwarfacs com Imagine the drop in crime if marijuana became legal Another huge impact would be the crumble of the Mexican drug cartels Currently marijuana accounts for about half of the cartels revenue Legalization of marijuana would cripple their business and also loosen their grip over U S street and prison gangs It would also allow for more focus on deadly drugs such as cocaine heroin and meth Marijuana offers many health benefits as well and many people are unable to get those benefits for fear of being arrested having their children taken away losing their access to medications and losing their jobs and or licenses Marijuana can be utilized for its medical properties in more ways than just smoking it Cannabis oil can be extracted and used to treat epilepsy in children without any risk of the child having any high The THC is removed and the marijuana is broken down into a pure cannabis oil

There are many people that say medical marijuana is an excuse to simply get high this is simply not the truth Marijuana can be used to treat an array of medical conditions such as Glaucoma epilepsy it can remove carcinogenic effects of tobacco and improve lung health it has been proven to stop the spread of cancer plus also calms the effects of cancer treatments Marijuana can also treat pain disorders depression anxiety Lupus inflammatory bowel disorders and so many more health issues From an industrial standpoint hemp provides many advantages over a great deal of current resources that America utilizes Hemp fibers are considerably strong which makes it ideal for the production of many products like paper fabric and rope Hemp produces a higher yield per acre than cotton and has a growing cycle of only 100 days instead of 160 Hemp seeds provide more protein than soy and according to the U S Department of Agriculture https www usda gov you can produce four times as much paper from an acre of marijuana than an acre of trees plus marijuana can be harvested at a quicker rate than trees But perhaps the most important attribute of hemp is its ability to produce a substantial amount of cellulose Cellulose is a compound that in more recent years has been converted into a bio fuel called cellulosic ethanol

This bio fuel can power everything that gasoline currently does and is being produced most commonly in the form of energy crops mostly corn and cotton Hemp holds an advantage though because it can be produced more frequently than cotton and it yields four times the amount of cellulose you can get from a corn stalk The benefits of marijuana greatly outweigh the disadvantages Not only can our economy be positively affected it also with benefit our crime and health treatments and our environment Unlike alcohol and tobacco marijuana is not addictive and has no related deaths Imagine what it would look like if all the energy spent fighting marijuana was put towards fighting terrorism incurable diseases saving our planet There is so much potential in the things we can do from one little plant It s hard to see why cannabis is still illegal in the country The public has gotten it into their heads that legalizing marijuana is the same as condoning it which it is not One doesn t have to condone the smoking of marijuana to vote for its legalization Marijuana should be fully legalized and the opinions and stereotypes that follow it must change in order for the full benefits to be seen
