Joseph Turrins Arabesque 1990. Joseph Turrin has made incredible contributions to the brass and trumpet repertoire. He has written works for brass band, solo trumpet duets for trombone and trumpet as well as large works for wind ensemble. Many of his solo trumpet works were written for and recorded by one of the most famous trumpet players in the United States Philip Smith. Arabesque is an exciting and challenging piece for two trumpets and piano. Wide leaps and fast passages give the piece its showy quality. The trumpets play in a call and response style. This piece can also be played with concert band Henry Purcells Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major 1659 1695. Henry Purcell was an English composer most well known for his opera Dido and Aeneas. Although he is most known for his operas he also wrote for small chamber ensembles as well as instrumental solos. Like most sonatas at this time, this piece features three movements 1 Allegro, II Adagio, III Allegro. In most early sonatas with the trumpet, the second movement usually omits the trumpet because of the minor key. The trumpet at the time was not able to play chromatic pitches that were used in the minor ke.
