Dr Bronner’s is a family owned and run company that was founded in 1948 by Emanuel Bronner Dr Bronner s website states that their six cosmic principles define their most important relationships and guide them in all that they do Their principles are to 1 Work hard Grow 2 Do right by customers 3 Treat employees like family 4 Be fair to suppliers 5 Treat the earth like home and 6 Fund fight for what's right Their products are all certified USDA organic fair for life Oregon Tilth certified organic Vegan Action certified Certified B Corp Non GMO Project verified and are part of the Leaping Bunny program which means they have never tested on animals For my life cycle assessment I will be focusing on Dr Bronner's Pure Castile Liquid Soap Tea Tree which is made by saponifying a fat or oil with an alkali According to their website the saponification process is a simple one step reaction with no waste generated the glycerin is split off from the fatty acids and the fatty acids combine with the sodium or potassium to form soap while the hydroxide forms water The result is soap glycerin and water no alkali remains in our soaps Making the best soap The sustainability of the soap will be based on three criteria First their use of organic ingredients which are ingredients grown without the use of pesticides synthetic fertilizers sewage sludge genetically modified organisms or ionizing radiation Organic FAQ Second fair trade which verifies that ethical working conditions and fair prices are provided Lastly packaging which has to be 100 post consumer recycled to be considered sustainable I will also be assessing the sustainability of the product by analyzing the life cycles of two main ingredients
