JULIA TRAN CRIMSON EDUCATION BOLIVIA ENVIRONMENTAL REFUGEES 1 What is the problem Over the past 5 years the global refugee crisis has garnered more media attention than ever before in particular political refugees While the general public is aware of the millions of Syrian and Iraqi refugees displaced by regions affected by war and terrorism less attention has been given to climate refugees who are just if not more in need of the help of the UN Despite the largely unpredictable nature of environmental disasters and the awareness of the rapid rise of global warming the UN needs to do better to help environmental refugees Resettlement of environmental refugees suffers when countries do not make the efforts to understand the human behaviour behind their actions post disaster as well as what will best help their needs in risky situations Environmental refugees alike political ones are put in danger by circumstances which they cannot control These circumstances however can be prevented by ensuring that countries are committed to fulfilling promises made during UN summits to reduce their carbon emissions and hence slow down the rate of global warming and prevent some of these disasters
