This research article focuses on both positive and negative effect that social networking sites SNS have on romantic relationships This particularly study primarily uses Facebook because it is the most widely used SNS and has more than 500 million active users The people that took part in the study were all college aged students because they were the most involved in social media The research focuses on how a romantic partner s online activity can promote both jealousy and relationship happiness and how the craving for online popularity can affect the relationship as well The research notes that social media is not a positive or a negative tool in a romantic relationship that it is how the participants utilize the public sites that cause these effects Another variable considered in the study was how high or low the participant s self esteem was as well The author illustrates three characteristics that in their option have a huge effect on romantic relationships due to the use of SNS The first was that SNS increased the amount of information about the partner that s available Saying that there is much more information easily excisable about a person due to what is displayed on their online profiles Second is that SNS provides a socially acceptable way of monitoring what a significant other is doing SNS allows someone to actively keep track of who and how the person they are romantically involved with is acting online It's A much more acceptable way of doing this instead of for example they go through the other individuals phone That is a clear violation of privacy and trust in the relationship
