Noplag vs GPTZero
GPTZero is the AI-detection brand most educators recognise. Noplag is a full plagiarism + AI specialist with documented ESL calibration and an open-source algorithm. Both have the same Stanford-paper bias problem; we mitigate it, GPTZero acknowledges it.
Choose Noplag if
- You need plagiarism + AI in one product — GPTZero is AI-detection first with plagiarism as a side feature
- You write ESL content — both have the Stanford 61% FPR problem; only Noplag commits to publishing per-language calibration, which lands with AI detection on the roadmap
- You need to see the AI-detection algorithm — Apache 2.0 + Binoculars open paper vs GPTZero's proprietary perplexity model
- You write in a non-English language — Noplag's detection is calibrated for English, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, and Ukrainian at launch, with more rolling out; GPTZero is English-primary
- You need self-host for confidential drafts — Apache 2.0 + Docker; GPTZero is SaaS only
- You need to defend an AI-verdict at an integrity hearing — auditable algorithm + per-sentence transparency vs single percentage
Choose GPTZero if
- You only need AI detection — GPTZero is the pure-play and you don't want a plagiarism checker bundled in
- You already use GPTZero's Origin K-12 product or institutional dashboard for educators
- You need GPT-4-specific detection — independent tests put GPTZero at 95% on GPT-4 text specifically
- You write in Google Docs and want GPTZero's Docs add-on / Chrome extension overlay
- Your school district has standardised on GPTZero — brand familiarity with educators is genuine
- Free-tier breadth matters — GPTZero offers 10k words/month free; Noplag is 2,500 words per check (unlimited checks)

What detection costs you in each tool.
GPTZero meters by a monthly word cap rather than per-document credits — generous on the free tier, but AI detection is the core product and plagiarism is a recent add-on. Noplag is flat-rate and bundles the full plagiarism cascade with AI detection. GPTZero prices below are their published 2026 plans.

If your only need is AI detection on English content, GPTZero's free tier covers a lot.
GPTZero genuinely earned its educator-brand recognition — they're often the first AI detector a teacher tries, and the free-tier word allowance (10k/month) covers most classroom volume without payment. They're strong on GPT-4-specific detection. Noplag isn't trying to replace that workflow. We compete where the single-number verdict starts breaking — ESL writers, non-English languages, Claude-generated text, integrity hearings where the algorithm needs to be defensible, and any case where you want plagiarism + AI in one pass instead of two tools.
Read the methodology notesQuestions from educators comparing the two.
- Is the 99% accuracy claim real?
- It's GPTZero's marketing claim. Independent reviewers (Cybernews 2026, EyeSift benchmark) measured 84.7% accuracy with an 8.6% false-positive rate on a 200-document mixed corpus — strong on GPT-4 (95%), weak on Claude 3 and humanised text (40% on heavily-edited AI). Noplag's AI detection hasn't shipped, so we have no comparable number of our own to put beside it — ours publishes when it clears evaluation, and the plagiarism benchmarks we do publish are at /docs/developers/benchmarks.
- Both detectors flag my ESL writers — does Noplag actually do better?
- The bias is the same Stanford 2023 finding (61% FPR on TOEFL essays). Noplag's mitigation is a per-language calibration model trained against ESL-only validation sets: when the lexical signature suggests non-native English, the verdict recalibrates and ships labeled “ESL ADJ” with documented residual error around 3%. GPTZero acknowledges the bias publicly but does not publish a calibration model. The score is the same number; the methodology to defend it isn't.
- Does GPTZero have plagiarism detection?
- Yes — they added plagiarism as a secondary feature, but AI detection is the primary product, and the plagiarism corpus and matching cascade aren't as deep as a dedicated checker. Noplag runs winnowing fingerprints plus live-web verification today, with MinHash LSH and vector embeddings on the roadmap, and adds citation classification (quote vs paraphrase vs uncited) — closer to what a dedicated plagiarism tool gives you.
- Does Noplag integrate with Google Docs like GPTZero does?
- Not yet. GPTZero's Google Docs add-on is a real distribution advantage — they earned that integration with educators. Noplag's primary surface is the web app + API; LMS integrations (Canvas, Moodle) ship in v1.1, and a Google Docs add-on is on the v1.2 roadmap. Not in v1.0.
- How does Noplag detect Claude 3 vs ChatGPT 5?
- Noplag's AI detection is coming soon (on the v1.2 roadmap). The approach is Binoculars (Hans et al. 2024), which is model-agnostic — it compares a small reference LLM's perplexity against the test text, which generalises across LLM families. Accuracy publishes when the feature clears evaluation rather than ahead of it, measured on a mixed-model corpus; GPTZero is at roughly 70% on Claude 3-generated text specifically. No detector is perfect on humanised text, but the methodology doesn't disproportionately fail on one LLM.
- What about self-host for K-12 districts with strict privacy?
- Apache 2.0 engine + Docker — runs entirely inside your network, useful for K-12 districts with student-data-privacy mandates that prohibit cloud-based detection. GPTZero is SaaS-only; their Origin K-12 product runs in their cloud. For districts that must keep everything inside their VPC, self-host is the answer.
- Will Noplag replace GPTZero for our institution?
- If your faculty is happy with GPTZero, we don't argue for switching wholesale — the brand familiarity is genuine. We argue for adding Noplag in the cases where GPTZero falls short: ESL writers, non-English coursework, integrity hearings where the verdict is disputed, and any context where you need the plagiarism check + AI detection in one pass. Plenty of institutions run both.
Run a contested AI verdict through Noplag. See if the score moves.
Drop a draft that GPTZero flagged as AI-likely into Noplag. Compare the per-sentence breakdown, see whether the ESL-adjusted calibration moves the verdict, and check the algorithm citation. Free up to 2,500 words. The transparency is what survives the integrity-board conversation.
