FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions from teams migrating from Turnitin.

Is Noplag as accurate as Turnitin?
On the open web and academic content, yes — we use the same broad source categories. Where Turnitin is genuinely better is matches against their 200M+ stored student paper database, which we don't have. We're closing that gap with the Noplag Database (anonymized fingerprints from production traffic — see the v8 corpus doc) but won't match Turnitin's institutional paper-DB depth for several years.
Can I import my Turnitin reports?
Yes — Pro and Enterprise tiers get a one-click PDF/HTML import that preserves match annotations and source URLs. The conversion is lossy on Turnitin's proprietary similarity scores (we recompute), but text-level annotations transfer cleanly.
What about Turnitin's student paper database?
This is the one area where Turnitin has a genuine, hard-to-replicate advantage. Their 200M+ stored papers catch student-to-student plagiarism within and across institutions in ways no other tool can. If catching student-to-student copying is your dominant use case, Turnitin is still the right tool. For everything else (open web, academic, AI-content, individual checking), the comparison flips.
Does Noplag work with my LMS?
Canvas and Moodle integrations ship in v1.1 (Q4 2026). Blackboard and D2L are on the v1.2 roadmap. If you need a specific LMS that isn't on our list, we'll build it for any Enterprise customer with >2,000 students.
How is Noplag's AI detection different from Turnitin's?
AI detection is coming soon — it's on our v1.2 roadmap, not live yet. When it ships it will use Binoculars (Hans et al. 2024), an open published method with documented per-language eval. We'll report AI-likelihood as a signal with per-sentence transparency, not a verdict, and surface explicit ESL-writer disclaimers. Turnitin's AI detector has been disabled by Yale, Johns Hopkins, and Northwestern over false-positive concerns. We won't claim our detector is perfect, but our methodology will be auditable and the failure modes documented.
Can I self-host Noplag for sensitive documents?
Yes — the detection engine is Apache 2.0 and runs in Docker. Enterprise customers get the cloud corpus shipped as an indexable bundle. Turnitin offers no self-host option.
How long does migration take?
Typical timeline: week 1 — parallel-run trial setup; weeks 2–4 — faculty training; weeks 5–8 — student rollout; week 12 — full cutover. We provide a dedicated solutions engineer for the duration.
