Abstracts are important primarily because they provide an overview of the content of the journal article without having to go through reading the entire article This is especially useful owing to the fact that many journals exist behind a paywall That is to gain access to journal articles individuals and institutions must pay for the access to these articles Prices for each article range from 10 to as much as 40 What this means is that individuals who wish to access journal articles must first ensure that the article that they are to pay for must be in line with their fields and must be relevant to their field of study However many educational institutions provide access to journal articles As such scientists and scientists in training may find more access to journal articles while in their respective educational institutions Furthermore abstracts also provide a way to reach audiences who are not experts in the field As Dr Powers has mentioned the abstract provides a simplification of the topic wherein individuals from all fields can somehow understand the research being discussed when reading the abstract Powers While abstracts may seem simple and short these sections are usually written last and are challenging to write as it tasks a scientist to summarize his or her research into approximately 150 words without going into full detail of the research and at the same time while not losing the sense of the research

The next section of a research article is usually an introduction to the research with a brief overview of the current progress in the field In the paper by Reijerse et al the introduction discusses the structure of the H cluster in FeFe hydrogenases These structures are discusses through words as well as through the use of schematic diagrams wherein a structure of H cluster is included in the paper Reijerse et al While scientific writing uses words in order to convey the research it is important to include diagrams in order to further elucidate the point being made in the descriptions provided Furthermore figures and diagrams are also used in conveying the results especially for discussing experimental results in a scientific journal Figures like graphs provide an easier means of interpreting results not only for the authors of the paper but also for the intended audience Examining Figure 2 in the paper by Reijerse et al it is easy to see the behavior of the spectra of CrHydA 1

Reijerse et al Tables may be presented as well in order to convey information but for this case a figure is more appropriate owing to the fact that a table may be harder to read due to the sheer number of data that it may include Figures are also included in Vander Heiden et al s journal article wherein a figure is used in place of discussing in full detail the process of metabolism in the body Discussing the process of metabolism may take several pages However through the use of a flow chart as seen in Figure 3 of the paper the entire process of metabolism along with the enzymes involved can be understood Vander Heiden et al The most important part included in the journal article is the result and the scientific findings obtained by the authors These results may be presented in various forms whether through words or through images These scientific findings are the main proponents of scientific writing Through the publication of results in a scientific journal scientists are first able to successfully foster rapid information dissemination among other individuals in their field Furthermore scientific journals provide scientists to establish their claim on intellectual property ensuring that their work is recognized by other scientists and individuals Furthermore publication in a scientific journal ensures scientists that they have ownership to their results owing to the fact that they have a record of their results Reading scientific journal articles may be intimidating especially for undergraduates and beginning students The intimidation arises from the fact that most journal articles deal with topics which are advanced and these journal articles are typically written by individuals who have already obtained advanced degrees in their respective fields

However the advantage in reading journal articles is the presence of citations throughout the article These citations provide a link to other journal articles as well as to other sources which may be more intellectually accessible to a novice reader Furthermore the citation process provides a sense of assurance that the content of the research is sound and that there is no plagiarism included in the published scientific journal article Conclusion Writing is an important part in the scientific process as what was emphasized throughout this paper Focus was especially placed on writing journal articles wherein the peer review process ensures the quality and the novelty of the researches in a given field However scientific writing can be found every step of the way As evident from the interview with Dr Powers scientists write almost endlessly from lectures to grants and to scientific journal articles Thus it is important for students who wish to be involved in the field of science and biochemistry to learn how to write properly Learning how to write is perhaps a never ending process While the standard of scientific writing has been pretty much set it is important to actively learn and participate in the writing process in order to become more successful in the field of science
