Research Proposal ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY ENHANCEMENT OF SOLDIER PILE RETAINING WALL, Department of Civil Engineering Faculty of Engineering UNIVERSITY OF MORATUWA SRI LANKA Table of Contents Table of Contents i Introduction 1 Problem Statement 1 Significance of the research 2 Scope of the study 2 Aims and Objectives of the research 2 Proposed Methodology 3 Work plan 3 References 4 CE4902A01_140053C I Introduction At present in urban areas the necessity of basement is increasing due to the scarcity of lands Therefore to optimize the use of land areas the depth of excavation is increased because of the increased number of basements Deep excavations are constructed near to surrounding buildings and services in urban areas due to limitation of spaces Thus the design of safe and economical retaining structure plays a very significant role in the design of deep excavation The measures considered for the selection of type of earth retaining wall are size of excavation ground conditions ground water level vertical and horizontal displacements of adjacent ground and limitations of various structures availability of construction cost speed of work and water tightness of wall Considering the above factors soldier pile retaining wall with timber lagging is the broadly used earth retaining structures mainly for stiff soil conditions where the penetration of ground water into the excavated area is not a problem

Major advantages of soldier pile retaining wall are fast construction low cost doesn t require advanced construction technique and resistance to hard driving Not only that unable to use in high ground water table conditions surface settlements due to poor backfilling and not much stiff as other retaining walls like steel sheet pile wall diaphragm walls pile walls and soil nail walls etc are the foremost drawbacks in the soldier pile wall Problem Statement In most constructions soldier pile retaining walls are one of the oldest methods of the earth retaining structure which are used as a temporary shoring in deep excavations Earlier Coulomb and Rankine derived expressions for earth pressures behind retaining walls Also experimental studies were carried out by Terzaghi in the early 1920 s After that codes of practice and other advisory documents like CIRIA British standards and Eurocode were published to understand the behavior of structures and depends on practical success and failures but full analysis of these is not possible in all situations

Though all the above methods which have been solved by hand calculations with number of simplifying assumptions consume too much of time in routine use Then Finite Element Method overcomes the shortcomings of the analysis of the retaining wall CE4902A01_140053C In soldier pile analysis also there is no wide information and analysis on the stability of steel H sections of soldier piles in code of practices and other derived equations So that it is necessary to analyze the stability of the soldier pile retaining wall by numerical analysis Significance of the research Generally the overall stability of retaining walls are estimated using the limit equilibrium method or finite element method FEM of analysis where the conditions of failure are assumed to ensure the provision of sufficient embedment depth to prevent over turning of the wall and to ensure the overall slope stability Though in the design of soldier pile retaining wall both disturbing and restoring moments are resisted solely by the soldier piles with steel H sections and the leggings transfer the lateral loads to the soldier piles

Moreover the stability of the soldier pile wall is the major design concept for both designers and contractors because excess ground settlements behind the wall can cause tremendous damages to adjacent buildings and surroundings But in the design of soldier pile walls the depth of embedment of steel H sections is conservatively not taken in to attention So that a proper study on stability of soldier pile retaining wall is required to strengthen the construction industry Scope of the study Still many researchers examine the stability of soldier pile retaining wall considering many factors like different soil types types of lateral supports and spacing of soldier piles etc Most of the studies aiming to effectively improve the performance and stiffness of the soldier pile retaining wall to minimize deflections meanwhile without any requirement of wales and struts as lateral supports But the depth of embedment is the considerable factor in the deflection of soldier pile

So it is necessary to pay attention in this study to avoid the damages and increment of construction cost in future Aims and Objectives of the research The goal of this research is to investigate the stability enhancement of the soldier pile retaining wall The objective of the current study is analyzing the stability of the soldier pile retaining wall for different depth of embedment and spacings between steel H sections for specific excavation depth in sandy soils CE4902A01_140053C 2 Proposed Methodology Literature reviews on various types of testing done and methods adopted to analyze the results Understanding the factors that effecting the stability enhancement of the soldier pile retaining wall Identification of the major factor that has effect on the stability of the soldier pile retaining wall Analysis using Plaxis and Midas Outline the results Work plan CE4902A01_140053C 3 Work Break Down Novemb er Decemb er Januar y Februa ry March April May June Preliminary Literature review Study on software Plaxis Midas Data collection Soil properties material properties Analysing datas using softwares Survey camp Semester 6B Examination References CE4902A01_140053C 4 CE4902A01_140053C CE4902A01_140053C
