Ethical issue on cellphone use while driving in the US Introduction Cell Phones has become a huge part of society's everyday life Despite this cell phones have not been around that long Many people don t know when the first portable device was invented or its origin All credits go to Martin Cooper an American engineer that worked for Motorola Inc In November of 1972 Cooper and his team began to work on a portable device which resulted in the making of the DynaTac It weighed 30 ounces and measured ten inches long three inches deep and one and a half inches wide In order for the phone to be legally operational in the United States in had to get permission from the FCC for private companies to operate wireless communications It got the FCC is permission in 1983 in which it became the first commercial cellular service to began operation in the United States Now today there are over 200 million users and it has struck controversy over the ethical issue on banning cell phone usage while driving Governmental Agencies


First and foremost cell phones cause a distraction to drivers while they are on the road this is known as distracting driving Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving including talking or texting on your phone eating and drinking anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA stated that in 2015 alone 3 477 were killed and 391 000 were injured in involvement of distracted driving This is tremendously concerning especially when cellphones are a huge contributor to these accidents They should ban cellphone use in all 50 states it is even recommend by the National Transportation Safety Board NTSB This recommendation are from the results of investigations and safety studies that NTSB have looked into Many will question why states should enforce laws prohibiting cell phone use while driving but looking into other laws that have been passed down and results improved there is no reason to question it For example before states required vehicle occupants to use seat belts their use was only 14 percent After states started passing seat belt laws belt use jumped to 59 percent in approximately 8 years Today with stronger seat belt laws high visibility enforcement and education campaigns seat belt usage is approximately 85 percent There have been similar results with other issues

This statement proves that passing a law and being strict about it they ll be great results Without a doubt these statistics should make it right to ban cellphone usage while driving In addition what the NHTSA has been doing to reduce the amount of drivers using their cell phones they have been doing campaigns and announcements teaching Americans about safe driving Victim's Perspective There has many cases of victims in the recent years where either themselves being the distracted driver or a distracted driver colliding with them In a particular case victim Nina Todd was part of an unforgettable accident that happened on November 28 2010 Nina Todd was with her two sons driving home after visiting her mother That was until another driver Karli Brown collided with her car During the accident Todd remained stuck behind the wheel of her car as she watched her sons five year old Maliki and four year old Alex slip into lifelessness strapped into their car seats in the back seat Later after an investigation police reported that Brown was speeding texting and passing in a no passing zone when the crash happened This is not right a mother should not have to face the consequences of her two sons being dead just because a reckless driver was paying attention more to her phone than the road

Nina Todd wrote a testimony saying I sat in a car and watched with my own eyes what one text did to my life I sat and watched my two boys be covered with sheets and was told they were dead No one deserves to live with the pain I live with This statement Nina Todd said should open the society's eyes to see that it is not ethical to drive while using a cellphone It can put their own life in danger and others too Non Distracted Driver Perspective A fairness ethical approach to the usage of cellphone while driving should be understood It should ethically be correct for drivers following the laws for their lives to not be endangered because another driver chooses not to follow the state laws regarding cell phone usage One study has found that drivers who text are 23 times more likely to crash relative to non distracted drivers this statistic proves that unfairness between distracted drivers and non distracted drivers Non Distracted drivers should not pay the consequences that distracted drivers cause In the same study it has been found that 96 of respondents knew it was against the law but continued to text and drive anyway This just keeps backing up the point that it's not fair for other drivers to deal with these selfish drivers Recommendation Although it is necessary that the social scientific economical and political perspectives are taken into consideration the factors regarding Ethical perspective it is recommended that all cell phone usage while driving in the United States should be banned
