The next was a University of Washington professor that headed the mechanical xxxxxxxxengineering program his name is Per Reinhall Reinhall was the main developer in the project and was the one that started developing prototypes in 2017 He used the mechanical engineering shop at the University to start the project IV They also recruited Dave Marver to be the business brains behind the project He got a grant from the NFL for 500 000 dollars along with 10 million dollars in other funding to keep on developing the helmet Soper 2017 Marver said that he was prepared for a slow adoption of the helmet in the NFL Milner 2017 Transition They all had a great idea and started the project but you might wonder why they thought to start this project The first goal was to keep kids safer while playing this sport Because kids are younger and less developed they are more susceptible to major brain damage There are over 3 8 million sports-related concussions a year Kosofsky 2017 The creators wanted a safer cheaper helmet that actually helped kids avoid damage II The new helmet might be able to save football for future generations

Because of head wounds the sport of football was in great jeopardy because many athletes and coaches were keeping their kids from playing football because they knew about the potential damages, it causes Marver 2017 III Keep players healthy and safe while they are playing the game A new light has been shown on the issue when at the beginning of 2016 a movie called Concussion came out The movie told of the danger of playing football Transition It was created for a purpose and that was to help players stay safe but the way it was created is also interesting The outermost shell is made up of a soft plastic The outside can be indented with even a finger pushing down on it This varies from the hard plastic with no give used by most other helmets II The next layer is an inch and a half of thin struts that act as shock absorbers III There is then a hard plastic shell under the layer of struts Ryan 2017 IV The layer that comes into contact with the player s head is a waterproof material that feels and behaves like memory foam V Because the helmet hasn't come out for private use it is still expensive and costs 1 500 dollars Garcia 2017 Transition With all of these new features people will have confidence in helmets restored and a new faith in football

The helmet in the future might be used by players of all ages and skill levels This might help people make the decision on whether to let their kids play football or not Transition While this new helmet might help reduce head injuries it is quite expensive and it will unfortunately not be used at lower levels for many years because of the price Conclusion This new helmet shows advances in safety and may restore the trust back into parents debating whether or not to let their kids play football It is still a new product and a third party s results have not been opened up to the public yet Whether it works or not this product has shown great improvement and innovation in this field
