These reasons prove that the introduction of Medicare was one of the most defining moments in the twentieth century that shaped Canada Lastly one of Canada s most defining moments in the twentieth century that has shaped our nation was Terry Fox s journey across Canada On April 12 1980 Terry Fox began his journey across Canada so that he would raise awareness for cancer research He began his marathon in St John s Newfoundland and ended it in Thunder Bay Ontario on September 1 1980 After 143 days and 5 373 kilometres Terry had to stop running because the cancer from his right leg had spread to his lungs The Terry Fox Foundation The next year he passed away at the age of 22 Terry Fox s marathon gained a lot of attention for Canada and it has left a legacy for everyone to follow He set an example that will never be forgotten His courage and perseverance inspired many people and since the first annual Terry Fox Run in 1981 there is over 9 000 Terry Fox Runs each year worldwide
