Essay Example on Great Britain has been standing alone against the newly expanded Germany

Since June of 1940 Great Britain has been standing alone against the newly expanded Germany They have been putting up quite a fight despite being continuously bombed by German planes and Prime Minister Winston Churchill believes that with American aid the British will be able to defeat Germany once and for all Nonetheless the general populace believes that the United States should be kept out of war at all costs The desire of the public above all is the reason that America should refuse Great Britain's request for supplies American culture during the 1920s and throughout the 1930s was one of isolation The American people have retreated within themselves and hidden from the rest of the world Because of this deeply ingrained distrust of war and those who make money off of war the American people are opposed to getting involved in the latest European conflict During the election of 1940 FDR preached not sending your boys to foreign wars which is what got him easily reelected It is the leaning of the general public at this time to avoid war and all involvement in it Many Americans especially those in the midwest feel disconnected from Europe and the war both because of the Atlantic Ocean serving as a natural barrier and because of conflicting beliefs Refusing Great Britain s request for aid would both keep Roosevelt's promise and appease the people Isolationism has thus far kept America safe and most people would refuse to fight or help make supplies for a foreign war due to this belief Not only is it in America s best interests to stay out of the war but maintaining the trust of the public would be the best and most critical move that President Roosevelt could make at this time

Because of their strict opposition to the war the people would also probably feel strongly against making and sending goods some that are likely never to be paid for They feel that they have enough to deal with due to the Depression and don't want the government spending vast amounts of money on supplies to be sent to a war that we have no reason to be involved in Refusing Great Britain s request for supplies would allow America to focus on our own economic interests Furthermore if deemed necessary we could continue manufacturing supplies and arms but rather than sending them storing them in case the U S is attacked by Germany or Japan At this point the United States is not up to snuff on modern warfare technology or troops and this would give us ample time to catch up and prepare to fight in the event we are attacked On the other hand America could simply use the funds to help restore our own economy rather than sending supplies that if Britain falls could just be used by the Germans against us This is the view of General George Marshall the army chief of staff who says that any aid sent now would be too late and we would only be supplying the enemy Some people may say that more people will be killed if America refuses to get involved in the war but without another major player on the field the war will likely be much shorter and cost fewer lives in the process The U S getting involved will simply add another force pumping money troops and supplies into a war that could drag on for many more years with the added fuel Rather than provide ammunition for another bloody war some suggest that America could intervene as a negotiator and help put an end to the fighting

However if we decide to stay away from Europe altogether there are some who argue that if Great Britain falls we would have lost our last ally and supposing Germany then sends their forces across the ocean we would have no one to help us fight However if we put America First and stock up on equipment and supplies we will in theory be prepared to handle a large scale attack on our own And given that in this scenario the government has not betrayed the trust of the public by going to war there would likely be more enlistment and support from the people seeing as we did everything we could to stay out of the fight America is a country of the people and what the people want is to remain unconcerned with the turmoil across the ocean Taking this into consideration it would be advisable to refuse the British request for aid This would be the best course because isolationism has developed into a mindset that would damage any ventures into war and we should be putting the interests of our nation before those of foreign nations In addition rather than support the violence the United States could attempt to negotiate a peace between the warring countries which would keep us neutral and end the war In this chaotic time it is important for Americans to have an honest and dependable government and that is why President Roosevelt should honor the desire of the people to stay out of the war
