Having completed my undergraduate BSC in Cognitive Science I was required to complete an Empirical Project By completing and passing this piece of course work I demonstrated an ability to understand the importance of contributing to research This is evident in my literature review which outlined the gaps in research within this area and how my empirical project aimed to fill this gap through my work I was also able to use current research to demonstrate the importance of the area being researched and why it was important that more research was carried out to understand the area in more detail I also ensure that when I facilitating clinical skills supervision I actively promote conversations around areas of weaknesses or less confidence in the team to address This also allows me to develop a CPD programme that fits for the team and can also enhance my futher learning Of particular significance to me was one that looked at OCD it allowed us to implement evidence based strategies within the session to then reflect on I believe this helped my clinical work immensely as I was able to reflect upon this experience to ensure my delivery was accurate This involved me observing a member of staff for one eight hour shift and tally marking certain criteria such as how many times there work was interrupted by answering the phone being asked questions by staff members or patients and how many breaks were taken This information was useful to see as a team how effective we were working and to collaboratively come up with ideas on how we could perform better

For instance as a result of this research we introduced weekly person centred activities liaised with the SALT team to devise PEC boards for patients whom had learning difficulties to improve engagement I enjoy working within an evidence based framework and find the studies that develop this evidence base interesting and informative It is also useful to understand the limitations of this evidence and how this gap can be bridged in different ways to exploring when there may be some ambiguity in the best approach what works This has been useful with changing approach for certain cultural groups such as those involved in the criminal justice system who infer lack of understanding with usual information gathering processes such as socratic questioning and reference to books I have a particular interest in the area of psychological trauma and resilience subsequently I have read many studies books and journal articles on this topic and the evidence based treatments available including trauma focused cognitive therapy and EMDR One of the reasons I enjoy working in Psychology is the life long learning and continually challenging yourself and acquiring new information I endeavour to continue developing and improving my own practice and also to contribute to further research which promotes wellbeing and adds to the evidence base Illustrative examples

Through working in IAPT services I have developed a keen awareness of the evidence based approach in mental health often drawing on NICE guidelines to ensure patients receive the best treatment to reduce psychological distress I am passionate about continued research in mental health and the importance of adding to the evidence base particularly where research is currently limited I am able to use clinical skills supervision effectively to help develop areas of weaknesses and learn from peers on best practice I attend service in house training to develop knowledge and skills Of particular significance to me was one that looked at phobia it allowed us to implement evidence based strategies within the session to then reflect on I believe this helped my clinical work immensely as I was able to reflect upon this experience to ensure my delivery was accurate Illustrative examples Whist working as a PWP I was keen to develop insight to how Cognitive Behavioural Therapists work at step 3 I therefore asked to shadow a step 3 therapist in the treatment of needle phobia a sample that is outside the remit of step 2 suitability due to the in session behavioural experiments I believe this shows an enquiring mind where I was also able to learn which evidence based techniques would be used and how implemented within sessions

A further example consists of my training practice and consequent teaching of step 2 evidence based ways of working with clients with long term conditions and medically unexplained symptoms Within the movement of IAPT it has been a requirement to adapt interventions to work with medical groups such as those with long term conditions I was put forward as a PWP to be taught specifically by health psychologists on how to adapt techniques I took part in a research study to test the effectiveness of such work by running a controlled group on wellbeing for Diabetes Since this I have been on various further training opportunities to further my knowledge on evidence based ways of working with this client group to which I have then been asked to run clinical skills groups for our service trainees
