323Afterwards the heart rate reflected a rise in the heart s pulse rate Throughout the research process it was concluded that the importance of health was vital With all of the components considered reflected upon and analyzed it was determined that the specific style of dance does have a direct effect on the dancer's heart rate due to the specific movements muscle strength and speed necessary to complete the choreography Background Information Dancing affects one's heart rate in many ways as it is a fast paced and hard working sport Dancers need to understand that dance can be dangerous and that the dancers need to mindful and careful with their health In order to stay healthy dancers need to maintain good eating habits and be physically fit in order to perform at their best level A person's heart rate or pulse is the number of times their heart beats per minute Normal heart rate varies from person to person Knowing one's heart rate is important and can help understand one s body better When resting adult human heart beats at about 70 bpm males and 75 bpm females However this rate varies among people and can be lower in serious and active athletes Changes in heart rate can be for a range of reasons which may include illness fatigue drug use exertion stress and anxiety
People who are very active experience increased heart rate respiration as well as perspiration Hypothesis If a dancer performs a fast paced routine with extensive choreography then their heart rate will increase due to the physical energy required to perform the specific style of dance Experiment Procedures 1 First the dancer has to find a person to record the dances and she needs a place to dance 2 Then the dancer has to perform the first routine 3 Check and record heart rate 4 Repeat 2 3 two more times 5 Compare heart rates and write down results Experiment Variables Independent being manipulated or changed style of dance Dependent being measured dancer s heart rate Constants stay the same dancer video camera dancing area Control being compared none Experiment Materials 1 Dancer 2 Dance shoes 3 Area with space to dance 4 Video camera 5 Dance attire 6 Stopwatch Analysis Results In the student's experiment process she collected data took pictures and was videoed while dancing Her heart rate before she performed all of her routines was 80 bpm After her first jazz routine her heart rate increased greatly It went up to 105 bpm This dance was very fast paced and high energy and this is the reasoning related to why the heart rate increased The exhibitor s next routine contemporary was not as fast paced as the jazz dance At this time the exhibitor s heart rate went up to 93 bpm Lastly the exhibitor performed a hip hop routine This dance was very fast and quick therefore her heart rate rose to 95 bpm
The student who performed this experiment formed a hypothesis before experimenting to solve her problem statement In the end of the experiment process her hypothesis was proven correct If she was to redo this experiment she would have made sure to take longer breaks in between dances so she was not as tired This experiment was very successful for the student despite her minor error She learned how to measure heart rate and how dance really affected her physical body She enjoyed this experiment greatly as dance is a huge part of the exhibitor s life and takes up 20 30 hours of her weekly schedule Analysis Results continued The exhibitor collected all of the required data in the time span of a week The data goes from a heart rate that is increasing to decreasing and then increasing once again In order to perform her routines to her best extent the exhibitor had to take a few quick breathers in between each routine In the line graph shown above it explains how her heart rate sped up and slowed down Acknowledgements For this project all of the following people and places have contributed choreography that the dancer researcher has performed in the videos utilized for this experiment Contemporary and Hip Hop routines choreographed by Ms Dani Solano Jazz routine choreographed by Miss Casey Rosenberg one of the many Miami Heat Dancers
