Inventing the University addresses common issues amongst student writers and goes into depth on their lack of knowledge of a discourse community David Bartholomae describes how writers prevents themselves from becoming apart of their academic peers and community The intended audience is for the writer as a student However it is discussed that writing is an ongoing problem for both the reader and writer He uses examples of different student s essays to to broadcast the common goal for students to communicate in a language that is understood by the community or audience The underlying message of Inventing the University is as a student whether reader or writer you must assume the right of speaking to someone who knows more about a topic than he or she does a reader from whom the general commonplaces and the readily available utternes about a subject are inadequate This was a big key as well as many others because it opened up to a topic on how Bartholomae felt from a student point of view and how he believed he or she could assume or take on the position of their audience by becoming one Bartholomae When it comes to the reader and the subject Bartholomae believes that you must become one with your audience in order to write from the university A student must first attempt to speak a language they don t know yet or try and mock their knowledge the best that you can until you can fully acquire the skill

The directly correlates to the the fact that if each community discourse you throw at yourself the more problems you'll face as a writer He goes on about how its is important to have confidence in your writing and use it to write a paper as if you are an authoritative figure They must also come up with conclusions rather than offering advice on the subject I completely agree with the statement because the examples of student essay he included supported his conclusion and left room for error and fixing However giving that in the first paragraph Bartholomae says every time a student sits down and write for us This tells me that the passage is actually directed to teachers in a way of preparing them for common errors of their students writings Therefore his audience is indeed teachers to prepare their students and mold them into better writers that speak the language of discourse Bartholomae wrote the essay as sort of a guide for both the student and the student The student would have to write what their teacher being in the students position would have wrote This goes back to how explains that you have to be one with your audience and connect with them In order for you to connect with your audience they must also feel some sort of connection with you In this case the logic of the teacher and writer or student putting themselves in the other s position in order to speak the language Throughout the essay Bartholomae s tone is very preachy and academic

I find this very ironic considering he wants students to write on an academic level therefore he is putting his voice out there in a way that speaks to his students He s using what he s been preaching throughout the essay to his students about the language of discourse as sort of a test to his readers It s him becoming one with his audience The preachy approach Bartholomae takes on help me stay focused in reading what he wrote because it was almost as if he was repeating himself to get his point across However due to language and diction at times it was almost difficult to read and fully understand the text and what it is that I am reading That was the most discrating part for me Then again his writing is organized to fit the language of the community He does heavily emphasizes that in order to write like a teacher you must you the language of discourse even if you don t fully know it for yourself yet Bartholomae uses both personal and statistics when writing inventing the University In his essay he included papers from different students and critiqued their ability to write to make points He goes to point out errors in what some students made and how they could go on about fixing them He analyzes their ability as students to be creative and express that through their writing while reaching to an audience The quality of Bartholomae evidence hardcore from what he s seen in student s writings He gives a lot of concrete evidence and direct errors shown present from examples of his students essay that he included in his own After close examination of this publication I noticed that a lot of the information he s throwing at his audience can seem repetitive or maybe even redundant sometimes but I believe he organized it that way for his readers on purpose The structurally built this publication specifically to inform his audience and appeal to their logos of understanfingfor the language of discourse Overall I feel as if
