445Is the movie The Matrix a better reflection of Descartes meditation or Plato's allegory of the cave I believe the movie The Matrix is a better reflection of Plato's Allegory of the cave rather than Descartes meditation I believe this because Descartes meditation is about a man who decided to change his perception on life Plato's Allegory of the cave is about prisoners who weren t exposed to reality so they didn t have any knowledge to imagine a world outside of their own and the one they only know This reflects the matrix because in the movie we see Neo a computer programer by day but by night a computer hacker who only knew reality the way it was set up for him Both the matrix and Plato don t know the difference between what they know and what is real Premise 1 Acceptance of Truth The first main similarity between the two is how both the reading and movie started to accept the true nature of their reality In the movie the matrix Neo gets contacted by Morpheus due to the fact that they believe he is the one to defeat the Matrix The matrix is about this man who was born inside of a very intelligent machine and he had the ability to change what he wanted to remake the matrix Neo must come to the realization that senses can be systematically deceived
The passage and movie both need to dig deeper and get a better knowledge before assuming Just like the prisoners did with the shadows and Neo did with the matrix controlling the world Neo better understands how the machine is deceiving him making him able to decode it In plato's allegory of the cave although the prisoners were released into the real world once they went back in to the world they knew everything didn't seem the same since knowing that shadows and fire do not control them and their is a different world behind all of it Descartes meditation doesn't relate to The Matrix like Plato does because in Descartes all that happens is this man changed his perspective on life he didn't accept and not accept anything Premise 2 Both worlds are controlled by power Along with Acceptance of truth another apparent similarity between the two is the fact that both the passage and the movie are controlled by a power The Matrix is controlling their world and everyone in it Whereas in the Plato's allegory of the cave the fire giving of shadows is what they are set to believe is controlling them Morpheus knows that the matrix can be defeated that is why he brings Neo in to override its power
The prisoners in the cave realize that the fire is powering their world and when they escape they realize their is so much more than just a shadowing projecting their lives In the matrix when Neo gets brought in towards the end of the movie we see in a scene that as Neo is trying to defeat the matrix and everything that has to do with it it isn't an easy job but before giving up he tries multiple things because morpheus has faith in him that he is the one because he had believed that he could defeat it he was successful In the cave the prisoners escape and see that the one projecting the shadows is the fire and realize that the outside world is so much more different then the world they know of and have known of since they were born and tied up to the chains Premise 3 Illusion The matrix centres on a concept that the known world is all just an illusion that is why I believe that Illusion is a very recurring similarity in both the matrix and Plato's allegory of the cave When Neo sees the real world for the first time he realizes that everything he though was real was only an illusion much like the reflection of the shadows on the cave walls which were only copies of things from the real world At first Neo believes that he is just a regular guy who knows a little bit more about the world then anyone else but when he gets in contact with Morpheus he realizes that there is more to the world then he knows as the movie goes on there are many examples that the world is all just an illusion like how he had to choose between both the red pill and the blue pill In the cave the prisoners see the shadows as just an illusion and find a way to break out of it Both the passage and movie both are based around their worlds being illusions Conclusion In conclusion Plato's allegory of the cave is a great reflection of the matrix It is fascinating to see how people react in a good way when finding out that there is another world beyond the one they know of They are both very similar because they relate to each other in the way that they both accept the truth they are both controlled by a power and their worlds are just an illusion
