Imagine doing something terrible that could ruin your reputation and that leads to killing innocent people Known as the Salem Witch Trials Arthur Miller's Play The Crucible gives his fiction dramatized and fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in Salem Massachusetts 1962 People who were innocent died due to false accusations John Proctor is to blame for the events that occured in The Crucible because he committed adultery with Abigail he prioritized his reputation over integrity and he pressured Mary Warren too much John Proctor committed adultery with Abigail Williams while being a servant in the Proctor household According to the book The Crucible John states Abigail I may think of you from time to time But I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again Put it out of mind We never touched Abby 32 This shows that John and Abigail committed adultery and he knows what he did and regrets it he wants her to just forget everything they had In other words he is saying he wouldn't do it again and wants her to move on and he acts like they never did anything but she can't forget him and is still into him 

Therefore he cares about her but he wants to stay with his wife Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail wants Elizabeth gone so it can be only him and her In conclusion committing adultery with Abigail makes her fall for him and makes her do crazy things and will do anything to get John with her Furthermore John Proctor did something that would be ruined his name if people found out John Proctor s best possession is his good name and the respect and integrity associated with it According to The Crucible John states I have known her sir I have known her 85 He also states Oh Francis I wish you had some evil in you that you might know me To Danforth A man will not cast away his good name You surely know that 85 This shows that John could've said something about his affair earlier but he cared more about keeping his good name In other words he wanted to keep his name clean and didn t care about the truth or even clearing anyone else s name until it is his own wife being accused 

Therefore he did not admit anything until Elizabeth was accused and needed a reason why Abigail would try to murder his wife In conclusion he focused on keeping his name pure instead of telling the truth and could ve helped clear other names Therefore he needed proof that Abigail is lying John Proctor found proof that Abigail is lying Mary Warren who is weak According to The Crucible John states Good Then her saintliness is done with We will slide together into our pit you will tell the court what you know 67 After Mary Warren states I cannot they ll turn on me 68 This shows that Proctor will not let his wife die over his affair or the lies Abigail told because she wants Elizabeth dead In other words he doesn t care what Mary says he is making her do it without thinking clearly of what could happen Furthermore he tells Mary Warren to tell the truth because he is not going to let lies kill Elizabeth because of what he did In conclusion he thinks he found a solution by making Mary tell the truth but he ends up pressuring her too much and it ends up as a bigger problem 

Therefore he is to blame and not anyone else because he caused everything and made things worse Others may believe that Abigail Williams is to blame because she drank a charm and tried to kill Elizabeth Proctor However I disagree because if John Proctor wouldn t have committed adultery with Abigail she wouldn't have been so into him and tried to get rid of his wife For example in The Crucible Abigail states She is blackening my name in the village She is telling lies about me She is a cold sniveling woman and you bend to her Let her turn you like a 33 This shows that Abigail is jealous and she still loves John Proctor Therefore she wants John by herself and wants to get rid of Elizabeth and do everything she can to make sure she dies In conclusion John Proctor is to blame because Abigail is just a child who fell in love with an adult who just used her and he turned her into telling lies In conclusion John Proctor is responsible for the events that occurred He did many things that caused many innocent deaths He committed adultery with Abigail betrayed his wife who sticked with him through the end He prioritized his reputation over his integrity until his wife was accused and didn't think to clear people s name because he wanted to keep his name clean He pressured Mary Warren too much because he felt guilty of what he did and wanted to fix everything quick Throughout everything if John would have minded his own business and not gotten involved with Abigail he could ve kept his name clean and wouldn't have the lack to be able to forgive himself until the end
