Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July 18 1918 in Mvezo South Africa yet unknown to him that he would be one of the most aspiring leaders to ever exist Due to his role in the ANC and leadership of Mandela South African laws changed but he was much more than just a political leader Nelson Mandela was a lawyer peace activist Philanthropist and a 37 time award winner However before his fame and life changing accomplishments Mr Mandela went through various challenges and significant events Nelson Mandela father was Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa was chief of the Tembu tribe Nelson Mandela mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni At the age of 9 Mr Mandela father died where he was placed in the custody of his uncle Nelson Mandela attended school in Qunu then receiving the name Nelson from Ms Midigane due to the custom of all school children receiving a Christian name When completing his Junior certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute furthered his education at Headtown a Wesleyan secondary school Mandela then attempted to study the Bachelor arts degree but was expelled for joining student protest Mr Mandela fled to Johannesburg in 1941 due to the king threaten to wed Nelson to his cousin Justice if Nelson Mandela did not return to 



Fort Hare In Johannesburg Nelson worked as a mine security officer he met Walter Sisulu and was later then introduced to Lazar Sidelsky Mr Mandela then continued to further his education by studying at the University at Witwatersrand but quit at his own will due to financial issues Nelson Mandela then obtained his LLB through the University of South Africa In 1942 Mr Mandela political life first emerged he first joined the ANC African National Congress in 1942 Mr Mandela then formed the ANCYL ANC Youth League In 1944 is when Nelson Mandela first wed to Evelyn Maise Walter Sisulu Cousin whom which he had 4 kids with Unfortunately Mr Mandela and Evelyn Maise divorced in 1958 In 1952 he was chosen as the National Volunteer in Chief of the Defiance Campaign This campaign of civil disobedience against six unjust laws was a joint programme between the ANC and the South African Indian Congress Due to his contribution in the campaign Mr Mandela and 19 others were convicted for the Suppression of Communism Act and received suspension for 2 year and received 9 months of hard labour In August 1952 Oliver Tambo and Mr Mandela constructed the first black law firm known as Mandela Tambo On 11 January 1962 Mandela secretly left South Africa under the name of David Motsamayi Then travelling around Africa and visiting England to attain support for the armed struggle Upon his return from KwaZulu Natal on August 5 he was arrested in a police roadblock Mr Mandela was sentenced 5 years for leaving the country without a permit As a result he began serving at the Pretoria Local Prison

The police then raided in within one months time Liliesleaf is an ANC hideout in Rivonia On 9 October 1963 Mandela and 10 others attended The Rivonia trial On 20 April 1964 Nelson Mandela famous speech was presented while facing the death penalty known as the Speech from the Dock became immortalised This speech is said to be 3 hours in length and it ends with powerful heart touching words which I am prepared to die This was a key incident in the history of South Africa and is of the prominent speeches in 20th century The Treason Trial which was a major part of Mandela s life first arose during a countrywide police swoop on 5 December 1955 this leading to the Treason Trial in 1966 The results were devastating as the marathon trial ended with the last 28 accused including Nelson Mandela and were acquitted on 29 March 1961 During the trial Mandela married Winnie Madikizela on 14 June 1958 They then had two daughters Zenani and Zindziswa The couple divorced in 1996 On June 11 1964 Mandela and seven other accused and were acquitted and the next day was sentenced to life imprisonment During this incident Mr Mandela s mother died in 1968 and his eldest son Thembi in 1969 He was restricted from attending their funerals Prison life for Mandela was a harsh and a cruel time it is said that the bed was his floor and a bucket as his bathroom

On August 12 1988 he diagnosed with tuberculosis Nelson Mandela was released In 1989 F W de Klerk became South African president and in February 1990 ordered the release of Nelson Mandela On 10 May 1994 he became the very first South African democratically elected President He then married his third wife on his 80th birthday in 1998 Graça Machel Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one duration as President His dedication to rights and helping those in need never ended He continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation in 1955 Sadly Mr Mandela death occurred as he died at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory tract infection Nelson Mandela bravery actions and multiple of sacrifices for us is remembered till today and shall be remembered as he is a result of changes in South Africa and the world
