Many may think there are not many similarities between the 1960's and the 1600's but there is much more in common than what many see In the trials of Joseph McCarthy McCarthy accuses people of being a communist to win his spot as the senator Source D In The Crucible the people of Salem accuse each other of witchcraft The trials of Joseph McCarthy are similar to the trials in Arthur Miller's The Crucible because they both accused to get revenge accused to save themselves accused with false or little to no evidence and both trials had similar people involved In The Crucible and the McCarthy trials people would accuse each other of being a witch or a communist for revenge In Source A Abby and the girls accused Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft Abby did this to get back at Elizabeth for firing her after finding out about her affair with Proctor Source A Also Elizabeth accused Rebecca Nurse of witchcraft to get back at her Rebecca was the midwife for Elizabeth and helped with the birth of all her children but seven of the eight babies had died Elizabeth had then accused Rebecca because of the death of her seven babies Source A During the McCarthy trials McCarthy had accused the secretary of the army of concealing foreign espionage activities Source B

These people had accused one another to get back at them from something they had once done In The Crucible and the McCarthy trials people accused of revenge with false or little to no evidence In the beginning of the play Abby was first accused of witchcraft because she was seen dancing in the woods the devil s home with the girls or Salem Abby then accused many people in Salem of witchcraft with no evidence at all just so she would be saved Source A Another way that people were accused of witchcraft with false evidence was when Mary was accused After she was accused of witchcraft Mary then accused Proctor of threatening her and accused him of witchcraft Source A Mary had done this with false evidence and the court fell for what Mary had said In the McCarthy trials McCarthy had come up with a list of 205 people who were members of the Communist Party Source E There was no evidence that these people were communist McCarthy had just put out their names to get more people to vote for him With no evidence in The Crucible and the McCarthy trials people had accused with no evidence to save themselves One way to get the name off your back is by accusing other people of witchcraft or communism During the witch trials Abby and the girls of Salem had accused Mary of witchcraft After being accused Mary had accused Proctor of threatening her and accused him of witchcraft Source A

This then puts the focus on Proctor and Mary was not accused anymore Another way people accused one another to save themselves was during the beginning of the play Abby was seen dancing in the woods which is considered the devils home After being accused Abby had pointed fingers at people all over Salem to get the heat off of her and to save herself Source A In the McCarthy trials McCarthy had formed a list of over 200 known communist Source E The only way they could save themselves was if they listed more communist People that were accused would point fingers at other people in their town to save themselves In The Crucible and the McCarthy trials there were people involved that had similarities In The Crucible Abby had soon lost her power and reputation after the people of Salem started to realized that witchcraft was fake Source A In the McCarthy trials McCarthy soon started to lose power as people figured out what was going on After the witch trials Abby had left Salem to go to Boston and became a prostitute Source A After the McCarthy trials McCarthy had become an alcoholic and died three years later The characters in The Crucible represent people who played important roles during the McCarthy trials Arthur Miller s trials in The Crucible are similar to Joseph McCarthy trials because of they both accused of revenge accused to save themselves accused with false or little to no evidence and the people involved in both trials had similarities In The Crucible people all over town accuse each other of witchcraft During the McCarthy trials people were getting accused of being a communist The only way people could say themselves in both trials was by confession or accusing other people Many can not see the similarities between the McCarthy trials and the trials in The Crucible but there is more in common than what most people see
