This paper will review three nurse informatics position descriptions by summarizing each description then analyzing how these descriptions incorporate elements from the nursing informatics scope of practice functional areas and standards of practice One job description will be selected with recommendations of how the description can be improved to meet employer recruitment strategies and attract high quality applicants Summary of Positions Informatics Nurse Analyst Requires Associate of Science in Nursing no required skills competencies listed five years of clinical experience in an acute care inpatient setting required Informatics Nurse Specialist Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Computer Sciences or related field Master's Degree in Nursing Informatics preferred AANC Certification in Nursing Informatics is desired required skills include working knowledge of PC s office productivity software including MS project three to five years experience with clinical information systems and three to five years clinical experience Senior Informatics Nurse Specialist Requires Master's in Nursing Informatics Healthcare Informatics Information Technology Business Administration or other relevant pertinent areas of study no required skills competencies listed five years in nursing and or healthcare administration Analysis The scope of practice for nursing informatics answers six questions about this specialty practice detailing who what when where how and why which defines what the nurse informaticist NI does in practice where the NI can be found in practice how the NI conducts their practice in the nursing specialty and why Bickford 2015
