The field of nursing informatics is relatively new to the practice of nursing and is a complex specialty that may not be clearly defined in an organization's job description with identified roles responsibilities and competencies required of the position The scope of practice for the informatics nurse and an informatics nurse specialist have been identified by the American Nurses Association ANA nursing informatics scope and standards of practice detailing pertinent characteristics and identifying functional areas of practice with accompanying competencies This framework that is defined by the ANA can be a valuable resource for employers when describing and evaluating this specialty practice and its responsibilities as each standard is accompanied by specific competencies that provide evidence of compliance Bickford 2015
