Passionless McCandless is Scandalous Chris McCandless was a foolish hero He was not stupid he did not have a brain disorder and he did not want to become famous Chris was simply an average guy who was smart and maybe too smart at that someone with too much on their mind constantly over analyzing and craving a peace of mind or purpose Chris Johnson McCandless is someone who people admire not only for his courageous acts but also for his mind set Chris s actions could have been reasoned through before he mae them and he did make some mistakes But in the end he is an inspiration a heroic image to the world to become more open minded and to be able to find oneself in a peaceful manner Into the Wild written by Jon Krakaue is a biography that was published in 1996 Into the Wild is the true story of Chris McCandless who is found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in September 1992 When McCandless returns home to his family from a good university he lives communal and donates his 25 000 savings to a charity for hunger gets in his car and drives away without telling anyone not even his own family where he is going Chris goes on by living on the streets and keeping as little as he can McCandless settles on a plan to go to Alaska and live in the wilderness for awhile So in April of 1992 McCandless gets dropped off near Mt McKinley and spends the next sixteen weeks living in a deserted bus made to be a shelter for hunters In late July McCandless probably eats some moldy seeds that causes him to starve to death Realizing he is going to die he writes a goodbye message and a few weeks later some moose hunters find his body in the bus with some of Chris McCandless s belongings like books and journals he had kept with him at all times on his excursion to Alaska

Throughout the novel McCandless is compared to other young men who went on excursions and ended up dying very similar to his own life But unlike the other men who die McCandless became a national headline an American icon These men all had many similarities that one might find interesting like Everett who was talked about in chapter nine of the book was also very intelligent and a graduate from Harvard Everett had gone on an excursion in 1931 Everett Ruess s letters reveal parallels between Chris McCandless and himself These are excerpts from one of Ruess s letters I have been thinking more and more that I shall always be a lone wanderer of the wilderness God how the trail lures me You cannot comprehend its resistless fascination for me After all the lone trail is the best I ll never stop wandering And when the time comes to die I ll find the wildest loneliest most desolate spot there is Both McCandless and Everett wanted to be alone and found the most pleasure from being alone away from society

Everett like McCandless also adopted a new name and in a letter writing back to home he makes the request of his family to please respect his new brush name Chris McCandless wasn't the only person that thought this way and Krakuer wasn't able to talk of everyone who thought this was but just the ones who were unfortunate similar to how McCandless was When McCandless turned up dead in Alaska and his death was reported in the news many people made the conclusions that McCandless must have been mentally disturbed Some even made the claims of Chris even being schizophrenic This is false because if McCandless was mentally disturbed his family would have reported it to the many journalist who questioned the family There are similarities among Rosellini Waterman McCunn and McCandless Like Rosellini and Waterman McCandless was a seeker and had an impractical fascination with the harsh side of nature Like Waterman and McCunn he displayed a staggering paucity of common sense But unlike Waterman McCandless wasn't mentally ill Chris McCandless like the other many explorers were not a run looking for something but on a run from society's expectations

Chris was possibly on a run from his parents and maybe mad at his father for keeping secrets from him for such a long time Chris was searching for his own identity away from what his family wanted or labeled him as and he was searching for some direction to where he wanted to go with his life The dictionary's definition of a hero is ones who is distinguished by their courage or ability admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities and McCandless fits this definition perfectly The way that Chris McCandless acted was heroic but he was a very persistent yet stubborn fellow McCandless wanted to question the world and experience things that others would not be able to see or value these things the way he did Many admire McCandless for his acts of bravery but many find him to be a little bit foolish
