370Good parenting can play a major role in limiting the risk factor and the behavior Community laws and norms favorable towards drug use substance abuse Community norms is the attitudes and policies a community holds about substance use and crime are communicated in a variety of way through laws and written policies through informal social practices and through the expectations of parent and other members of the community has on young people For example taxation of alcohol beverages Increase in taxes on alcohol beverages will decrease the consumption of alcohol beverages When community laws taxes are favorable towards substance use or if the laws are not clear children are at higher risk of substance abuse The drinking age is 21 but youth still abuse alcohol and other substances For example California just legalized the use of marijuana this doesn't mean you should go ahead and abuse it even though the law permits the use of marijuana According to National Survey on Drug Use and Health NSDUH about two thirds 66 6 of people aged 12 or older reported in 2014 that they drank alcohol in the past 12 months with 6 4 meeting criteria for an alcohol use disorder Also among Americans aged 12 or older the use of illicit drugs has increased over the last decade from 8 3 of the population using illicit drugs in the past month in 2002 to 10 2 27 million people in 2014 Of those 7 1 million people met criteria for an illicit drug use disorder in the past year
The misuse of prescription drugs is second only to marijuana as the nation's most common drug problem after alcohol and tobacco leading to troubling increases in opioid overdoses in the past decade An estimated 25 2 66 9 million of Americans aged 12 or older were current users of a tobacco product NSDUH 2015 Transitions and mobility substance abuse When student move from elementary school to middle school or from middle school to high school there is a significant increase in drug use Community with high rates of mobility appear to be linked to an increased risk of drugs The fact that students moved from community to the other does not mean they should be abusing drugs While tobacco use has declined since 2002 for the general population this has not been the case for people with serious mental illness where tobacco use remains a major cause of morbidity and early death NSDUH 2015 Low neighborhood attachment substance abuse There is higher rate of drugs problems and drug trafficking in community where people are less attached to there community Low income neighborhood is at higher risk of substance abuse There are so many youths that were successful in low income neighborhood and they don't abuse drugs this does not mean that every youth in low income neighborhood will abuse drug Extreme economic deprivation substance abuse Children who live in deteriorating and crime ridden community are likely to have problem with drug and substance abuse later on 2 Describe the prevention approaches you would recommend for your chosen two risk factors look at the six CSAP strategies pages 30 to 40 for ideas to be used when answering this item Provide at least one peer reviewed reference to support your answer Community risk factor
