The definition of racism is prejudice discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one s own race is superior In my words racism is when someone discriminates another for their race or beliefs When this book first came out racism and life in generally was very different In the book To Kill A Mockingbird I will now give you different examples of how different problems like this really are The theme of my topic is that you should get to know someone s character before judging them based on looks or other reasons Whether we admit it or not the first thing we notice about them is their looks How they dress if they re cleaned up or not what types of things they have Racism started to be a huge deal in the 1600s or so when african americans were being used for different jobs which was slavery Slavery lasted a very long time and even when it was coming to an end racism was still a very large deal Blacks could not use the same stuff as whites and life was a lot more unfair for them Nowadays it has gotten a lot better but some people still have a large problem with blacks This is mainly just because they don t look the same as us People can be quick to judge instead of taking the time to talk to someone different than us In the book a black

Tom Robinson was taken to trial for false accusations of rape and beating a young girl named Mayella Tom always went over to her house to help with anything she needed help with Bob who is Mayella s father had seen him one day and convinced her to turn him and say he did very bad things to her During the trial Tom had made the mistake and says that he feels sorry for Mayella Her lawyer walked over to Tom and said You felt sorry for her you felt sorry for her This was such a big deal because for any African American to think he s superior to any white person is messing with the order of things You never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb in his skin and walk around in it We don t know what people are going through We also don't know what it's like to be black or to walk around and be judged for something you won't ever be able to change about yourself One of the most powerful quotes I think from the story was There s something in our world that makes men lose their heads they couldn t be fair if they tried In our courts when it's a white man's word against a black man s the white an always wins They re ugly but those are the facts of life Throughout society white s word always had gone above blacks It may be the most unfair thing ever and it won't matter Just like how Tom shouldn't have been accused when he was just trying to help Mayella The jury voted against him because he was black they didn't listen to the facts that prove him innocent they barely even listened One strong personal connection I made was the fact that we need more people like Atticus in our world Even with racism not being as big of a deal there are still so many people filled with hate and are nothing but bad Atticus took the risk of getting hate having no one anymore and even getting killed He knew what the right thing to do was At the end of the trial in the movie when

Atticus was getting ready to leave all the blacks in the balcony stood up just to show their appreciation for him I just think it's so messed up how people get judged for things like this and racism is only one of the many different things Kids and adults get crap for things that they can't change about themselves Yes you have the ability to change things about you such as your character Things such as race are things you will never be able to do anything about Many people don't actually think about the things like that it's just an automatic judgement Racism to me is when someone is being judged or discriminated for their race or beliefs Problems like this are not as big of a deal as they were such as when this book first came out All these examples such as my theme the plot of this story quotes from the story and even personal connections are just some examples of how people deal with things You should always get to know someone before judging them on their looks
