Freshman English January 10 2018 The One Wise Man Romeo and Juliet Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet is Romeo's cousin and the peacekeeper in the play He is presented throughout the play as cautious and careful He uses his head instead of his heart which helps him makes great decisions In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare portrays Benvolio as being cautious and a quick thinker to get himself out of trouble Benvolio means goodwill in greek which mimic s his role in the play as the peacemaker Benvolio is a lot wiser because he uses his head when you use your head you are wiser given that using your heart can cloud your judgment This is the beginning of the book were a fight is about to break out between the Montagues and the Capulets Benvolio says I do but keep the peace Put up thy sword Or manage it to part these men with me 1 1 62 63 Benvolio asks his fellow mates to either leave in peace or to use a thy sword to break apart the fight Tybalt is wanting to pick a fight with Romeo but Mercutio is wanting to be the one to fight Tybalt Benvolio being the smart one tries to calm Mercutio's lust for a fight Benvolio says to Mercutio I pray thee good Mercutio let's retire 3 1 1 He warns Mercutio again And if we meet we shall not scape a brawl For now these hot days is the mad blood stirring 3 1 4

Because Benvolio is a civil person he would never think of wanting to get into a fight with the capulets just because he wants to Unlike Mercutio who does not use his head most of the time Benvolio is able to stay away from the Capulets who are always wanting to pick a fight with whoever goes against them Romeo who is a friend of Benvolio s is also different from Benvolio because he always uses his heart and never his head Romeo a Montague was in love with a person name Rosaline in Act 1 Benvolio and Mercutio are trying to get him to go to a party with him so that he can forget about his first love and move on Benvolio knows that Romeo uses his heart to guide him so he tries to play with his words to get him to move on Benvolio says Tut man one fire burns out another's burning

One pain is lessened by another's anguish and One desperate grief cures with another's languish Take thou some new infection to thy eye Benvolio is telling Romeo to forget about his past love and to meet a new one He is saying that if one door closes then a new one opens up By finding another woman Romeo will forget about Rosaline Benvolio was correct about this because in the end Romeo ends up finding his new love Juliet and forgets about Rosaline Benvolio is not only a great person to go to when you need your heart to be repaired but also when you need an escape route when killing someone named Tybalt Benvolio was not only able to help a broken heart but also a guilty person In Act 3 Scene 1 Romeo ends us killing Tybalt because Tybalt had killed one of Romeo s dear friend Mercutio Benvolio remembering the prince's warning in Act 1 One desperate grief cures with another's languish Take thou some new infection to thy eye tries to hide Romeo so he does not end up getting killed for killing Tybalt himself Because Tybalt had killed Mercutio first Tybalt was going to be the one that was going to face the consequences of his actions but since Romeo had killed Tybalt the prince decides that he will just ban Romeo from Verona If Benvolio had not told the truth of what happened in the story and made Romeo run then Romeo probably would have gotten a worse punishment Benvolio says to the prince

O noble prince I can discover all The unlucky manage of this fatal brawl There lies the man slain by young Romeo That slew thy kinsman brave Mercutio Benvolio does not play with his words but gets straight to the point Throughout the play Shakespeare displays that Benvolio is a lot wiser because he uses his head when you use your head you are wiser given that using your heart can cloud your judgment Unlike Romeo who uses his heart and Mercutio who is always looking for a fight Benvolio tries to see the rational part of things before he goes in head first and attacks Shakespeare shows in Romeo and juliet that Benvolio is the peacemaker between both families even though he is a capulet Considering his name means good will I think he is fit for the part
