The United States most definitely promotes democratic values Democratic values are included in the Declaration of Independence the Constitution and other significant documents speeches and writings of the nation The core values democrats represent are equality justice and liberty These values set the way life is for American Citizens The United States was not found on these values but they are promoted This country has endured slavery women s suffrage and other historical events The Democratic values set in place help this country have a peaceful setting and promotes equality as a whole Equality is also a big democratic value in the United States Everyone should receive the same treatment regardless of their racial background religion or how much money they have Blacks are not superior to whites just as christians are not superior to jews Riots across the United States uproar due to the lack of equality certain groups receive The U S believes in equality because it makes the citizens more peaceful and everyone should be treated the same Equality includes gender equality ethnicity equality race equality etc Diversity also ties in with equality

The US allows people of different races culture ethnicity etc Until 1920 women could not vote Women were also not equal to men and weren t treated as well as men were treated Most people in the early 1900s thought of women as the person to clean your house cook the food and other activities while their husbands were out working Another core democratic value is justice Justice is the quality of being fair and reasonable This ties in with equality All people should be treated fairly in getting advantages and disadvantages of our country No group or person should be favored This applies to receiving benefits and burdens of society and regulating the different privileges that arise from social cooperation over time Justice is the hope of preventing any bias or prejudice in court cases It s the fairness in protection of rights and punishment of all wrongs Each person is to have an equal right to the most extensive total system of equal basic liberties compatible with a similar system of liberty for all Legal systems aim to uphold proper rulings but it s possible to have unjust laws An example of an unjustified court case is the Murder of Emmett Till in 1955 Two men murdered Emmett Till and they weren t charged for it The case was biased towards the two white men

The jury was all white Because the jury was all white they were in favor of the two white men who killed Emmett Till It is said that because the defendants were white that the jury and the judge already had their minds made up Also add in the fact that the plaintiff s were colored In 1955 racism was a big conflict in the United States Colored people were hated This case occurred in south Mississippi so that makes it even worse Because the defendants were ruled innocent this lead to the civil rights movement for African Americans which stopped racism The last democratic value is liberty Liberty is very much like freedom It can be defined as our right to think act or behave without any interference from our government Personal political and economic freedoms are found here Liberty lets U S citizens believe in what they want think about what they want and vote for whom they want to be president The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights guarantees citizens the right to practice whatever religion they please The government cannot interfere with a citizen's freedom of worship In America liberty is not about doing what you feel like doing but about doing what you know you ought to do It is self government self mastery self control

It is a sense of duty personal responsibility and honor Examples of liberty occur everyday in the United States The citizens lets people believe in whatever god they want They give each other the right to speak They also give each other the freedom of assembly In his Second Treatise of Government John Locke 1632 1704 argues that the state must respect the natural rights of life liberty and property of its citizens and that the state can rule only by the consent of the governed Cheminant 1 This means one can conclude from this that individuals should have as much liberty as possible John Stuart Mill a british philosopher political economist and civil servant advocated the idea that one has the right to do as one wants so long as these actions do not interfere with the actions of another or cause harm He was one of the most influential thinkers in the history of liberalism Also Jefferson even asserted the importance of the freedom of religion freedom of the press freedom of person under the protection of habeas corpus and trial by juries impartially selected as principles that form the bright constellation that has gone before us Gilje 1 Democratic values are obviously very important to U S citizens These are three of many values that Democrats practice to help improve the basics of life in the United States They are the fundamental beliefs and constitutional principles of American society that help shape this country It requires the protection of liberties and freedoms respect for legal entitlements and the guaranteeing of free and uncensored information The democratic values state opportunity should be universal that access to opportunity should be equal that a free and democratic society is one that treats each person with equal concern and respect
