Throughout Macbeth it's a constant struggle of control At first Macbeth seems to be in control However after talking to the Weird Sisters it is painfully clear that they are the real ones in charge Control is defined as the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events The Weird Sisters clearly have this power especially when they tell Macbeth of the prophecies The Weird Sisters are the ones who hold all the control in Macbeth In the beginning Macbeth and Banquo are the first to run into the Weird Sisters They are told a prophecy that they both like thus putting dangerous thoughts in their minds Macbeth is told he will be king The witches hail Macbeth as thane of Glamis which is his original title and then as thane of Cawdor Macbeth is confused by the second title since the original Thane of Cawdor still lives The witches also say that Macbeth will be king one day Macbeth asks the witches for more but they have a prophecy for Banquo They say Banquo is lesser than Macbeth and greater and not so happy yet much happier Then they tell him that he will never be king but that his children will sit upon the throne 1 3 63 65 These prophecies show the truth behind the Weird Sisters They are also known as The Fates or Destiny They hold all of the control

They are manipulative Both Macbeth and Banquo believed that they had control over their lives but when presented with prophecies that will become the future they feel the need to make it a reality as quickly as possible This is the Weird Sisters plan all along They told the prophecies to get a reaction and action out of Macbeth and Banquo They wanted to cause chaos and destruction After Macbeth is rewarded Thane of Cawdor he writes home to Lady Macbeth He tells her of the prophecies and of being king one day She then comes up with a plan to kill the king to take their place on throne At this point in the story it is believed that Lady Macbeth is in control since she is the mastermind behind the whole affair of killing King Duncan You don't want to cheat yet you want what doesn't belong to you There s something you want but you're afraid to do what you need to do to get it You want it to be done for you Hurry home so I can persuade you and talk you out of whatever s keeping you from going after the crown After all fate and witchcraft both seem to want you to be king 1 5 10 20 However when you look at later events Lady Macbeth doesn t have control over herself so she can't have control over anyone else Lady Macbeth is clinically insane

There is no possible way that she could come with the plot to murder King Duncan and be truly in control She goes insane and ends up killing herself Obviously with her dead she has no control over anything and especially not the events that commence after her death This is now at the end of Macbeth Macbeth still believes that he is in control of everything but The Weird Sisters hold everything They told him only what they wanted him to know not what he needed to know The Weird Sisters gave Macbeth prophecies of who to fear and when to fear but they confuse him with riddles and give him false hope They planned for him to gain power due to his ambitious ways and then to be killed due to his false pretence of control Macbeth then understands that you can't control life Life s but a walking shadow a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more It is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury Signifying nothing 5 5 24 28 This is the point when Macbeth realizes that he never had control That life and destiny is not something you can control or manipulate It's going to happen either way

That you re just along for the ride Macbeth has lost his mind just as Lady Macbeth had He realizes that his time as king is coming to an end and that he will soon be killed When he learns about his wife s death he comments She should have died hereafter There would have been a time for such a word Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death 5 5 17 23 This also shows how he knows that everything is already set in motion and there is no stopping what is to come Although there seem to be many people in power throughout Macbeth the real ones in control are the Weird Sisters As previously stated control is defined as the power to influence or direct people's behavior or the course of events It is easy to see how they have the control throughout the story because they tell Macbeth prophecies for no other reason than to cause destruction By telling Macbeth he will be king one day they cause him to kill his King his friend and a man s family He has no self control over himself and can t resist the temptation of fame and riches
