Morality and Meaning The Road The purpose of morality is to teach you not to suffer and die but to enjoy yourself and live that's a quote by Ayn Ran I believe we all have moral standards Morality describes the principles that govern our behavior Without these principles in place societies cannot survive for long In today's world morality is frequently thought of as belonging to a particular religious point of view but by definition we see that this is not the case Everyone has a moral mind perhaps compas of some kind I feel that I have a strong sense of morality and the past few novels i have read emphasized the value of morality through God carelessness money and revenge Son an into to The Road not sure what this means In Cormac McCarthy schilling post apocalyptic book the value of morality is portrayed through God The ideas of morality are in the words of the Boy

The Boy has grown up in a world where civilization has disappeared where the trees and animals are long gone and the world is getting colder Where the good people including his mother have mostly committed suicide and the bad people kill and eat others to survive A world where religion and God simply do not exist And yet it was through the words and actions of the Boy that the writer was able to tell the idea of morality Morality is the main idea of this novel and almost everything revolves around it Dad The Man is the boy s father He guides the Boy throughout their journey together and shows morality in many ways He believes has been entrusted by God to keep the Boy safe and to protect him from harm and the horrible evils in the world even if that means killing him before the bad guys can get to him The Man wonders if he has it in him to do harm to his own son but if he has to do it he will He has a strong love for his son and always wants to do the right thing

The Boy is the only source of light in the man s world Everything he does is for his son and to protect him The connection that the man feels with his son is sacred almost holy he believes that his son is meant to be alive and God is here to help him He must push himself and his son to extreme measures in order to survive from the bad guys and starvation Conclusion There are many ways morality is strong throughout this novel The Great Gatsby In the Great Gatsby the author conveys the idea that morality is something of little importance to many people especially when it comes to obtaining status wealth Tom The Great Gatsby is one of the books that destroys the value of morality because of its lack of it Tom lacks morality in many ways At one point he violently says Civilization is going to pieces I've gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things Have you read The Rise of the Colored Empires by this man Goddard The idea is if we don t look out the white race will be will be utterly submerged It's all scientific stuff it's been proved Fitzgerald 12 Racism is one of Tom s strongly held beliefs He doesn't really understand the position of white supremacy but he assumes the idea trusting his source The Rise of the Colored Empires is accurate Instead of at least understanding and investigating his source of information

Tom adopts racism solely because it supports his social status above the rest of society In his drive to justify his old money supremacy Tom fails to consider the moral alternative of equality Gatsby Gatsby is another main character who lacks morality He and a man named Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter That's one of his little stunts I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn't far wrong Fitzgerald 133 Gatsby in his unstoppable drive to attain money and reunite with Daisy pays no heed to the morality of his actions He freely holds massive parties at which all become drunk and he pays for these parties and his luxurious home by running a multi state bootlegging operation propelling him into the status of the new rich But for Gatsby status and wealth is all that matters He remembers that Daisy left him because she could not wait for him to gain money so he seeks to resolve that issue through whatever means necessary never considering whether his actions are morally justified Carelessness There are also other values destroyed throughout this novel such as carelessness Jordan and Nick s conversation about carelessness is also important in establishing the moral values of the novel Nick initially criticises her for being a rotten driver and this conversation develops into a discussion of careless people Ironically Jordan says she hates careless people even though she is one herself The definition shifts to include people who are careless in relationships perhaps not caring or loving In Chapter 9 Jordan complains that Nick too was careless which led to her suffering from his ill treatment in the relationship Jordan is essentially self preoccupied but Nick uses the term more broadly He reflects that Daisy and Tom had no sense of social responsibility or respect for others Hamlet I think this is a fairly comprehensive description of what you are talking about but I have not seen what I would call an Introduction to the entire project And of course nothing on Hamlet
